New Pola Hotel

Shar‘a Khaled Ibn El Waleed, Luxor, Luxor, Egypt

On the southern hotel strip—though not on the river—this is a strong budget option, once you make it past the dim, dreary lobby and disorganized reception desk. Rooms are furnished with Egyptian-style beds (firm cotton mattresses atop a platform) with thick pillows; clean, bright bathrooms; and those at the front have good-size balconies, though street noise runs all night long, and views of the Nile are blocked by trees. Even more important for a hotel in this price range are the hefty deadbolt door locks and dependable air-conditioning. The best attraction at the New Pola is the roof pool with its wooden sundeck offering views over the Nile.

PROS

  • modern facilities for the price
  • secure rooms
  • large enough that you can sometimes find a room if you arrive without a reservation

CONS

  • breakfast served in a grim, basement-like back room
  • just because your room has a phone doesn't mean calls will be transferred to you
