Hidden away above the Gattegno department store, this small shoestring-budget pension is adored by students and backpackers. The high-ceilinged rooms are large—a few even have balconies—and beautifully appointed with 1930s-style furniture. The toilets and showers are communal but well kept—the owner, Mme. Cressaty, would tolerate nothing less—and the staff is more friendly and helpful than at most five-stars. The sunlit breakfast room is a great place to pick up tips from fellow guests on travel far afield. On the down side, the elevator is temperamental and guests often stay for months, which makes the best rooms difficult to get (there are no guarantees as to what room will be available when you arrive).
