These days, the pharaonic-theme decor at the Nile Hilton, which was Cairo's first international chain hotel, has a slightly kitsch, 1960s airport-lounge feel. No matter: sandwiched between the Nile and the city's main square, with an entrance that opens onto the Egyptian Antiquities Museum, this hotel is a true oasis of comfort in the middle of the city. Service is impeccable, rooms are spacious and have fantastic views—ask for a high floor, either city or Nile view—but bathrooms are small. The older section is preferable to the annex; if you want to indulge yourself, the Arabic Suite is more tasteful than the Thomas Cook Suite. Tennis fans love the red-clay courts.
