Mena House Hotel

Shar'a al-Haram, Cairo, Cairo, 12556, Egypt

This is the great colonial-era hotel in Cairo and has hosted almost every politician, celebrity, and member of royalty to visit Egypt, and it's both comfortable and convenient for the pyramids. It began life in the mid-19th century as a khedivial hunting lodge, but there have been numerous expansions over the years. Of course, it is the view of the Pyramids—they are so close you can almost touch them—that will leave you gasping, and rooms with a view are in high demand. The old section is a thousandfold more atmospheric than the newer garden wing. There is a clear hierarchy of rooms here, and the best of them go fast, so book six months or more in advance.

  • proximity to the Pyramids and views cannot be beaten
  • the main building oozes period charm
  • excellent food and service

  • it's at least 45 minutes from Downtown, so perhaps best for a one-night stay when you visit the Pyramids
  • many rooms are under renovation
  • staying in rooms without pyramid view is a big loss
  • Internet is not free in rooms
