Tucked away in a corner of the historic Vineyard Hotel, complete with fountain and views of Table Mountain, Au Jardin serves classic French cuisine imbued with subtle Cape and Mediterranean accents. The braised oxtail in phyllo with port and blue-cheese cream is good, as is the Mozambican crab cake accompanied by chilies, crab ice cream, and tomato-and-fennel coulis. Try the Karoo lamb with imam biyaldi (spicy Middle Eastern relish), garlic croquette, and rosemary jus as a main course. One dessert is reason alone to visit: a lemon trio in the form of lemon verbena and white-chocolate mousse served with lemon tart and lemon parfait. A seven-course tasting menu, including wine, costs R250.
