Shenandoah National Park

Location: Central Virginia

Known for: Skyline Drive, a 105 mi road that winds between open vistas, forest-hemmed stretches, and easily accessible wilderness.

Biggest crowds: Summer and Fall.

Accessibility: Skyline Drive can get extremely crowded in peak season, but you can see a lot from there.

Why kids like it: Easy hikes and amazing views.

What hikers say: There are over 500 miles of trails, including pieces of the Appalachian Trail.
