Go canoeing in Everglades National Park.
Canoeing is the best way to truly appreciate the rhythm and stark biodiversity of Everglades National Park. Numerous marked trails—some as small as two miles—will take you through the canopy of mangrove forests, salt marshes and wide-open ponds. The ultimate trail is a 99-mile journey that connects Flamingo with Everglades City. Depending on your route, you may see manatee, dolphin, otters, sharks, crocodiles as well as wide range of migratory and local birds.
How to Do It
Whether you take a four-hour guided tour with a park ranger or embark on a more ambitious 10-day tent-pitching water hike, you'll want to depart from Flamingo. If you're camping, permits are available at the Flamingo or Gulf Coast Visitor Centers for $10 plus $2 per person. Otherwise, short day trips can be arranged via the Flamingo Lodge, Marina & Outpost Resort (239/695-31010).
