What to Pack: Tokyo
This East Asian city has endless wow factor. Visitors come on sushi pilgrimages, to peep fantastic street style, and to experience Tokyo's neon-lit hustle. Curiosities abound here, and particularly when it comes to fashion. So, we tossed some key style picks into your proverbial carry-on.
Leave the black and neutral pieces at home. Instead, take a cue from the locals and try taking some fashion risks. Colors, natural and graphic prints, and sparkle are all fair game. To keep the look approachable, think of adding a feminine shape like this hot pink floral top with flirty peplum ($156.75) over a pair of black skinny jeans and funky plastic flatforms ($238 by Kenzo). Or opt for classics with a twist, like a light sweatshirt in a color wash ($59.90 at Zara), cigarette-cut jeans in a bold black and white stripe ($198 by 7 for All Mankind), or modest espadrilles gussied up in glittering gold ($241)
And of course, accessories like a statement cabochon necklace ($98 by Juicy Couture) are a smart way to pump any look, especially when packing space is tight. Prada's spring collection is inspired by Japanese motifs, like this flower-dabbled document holder ($295), which can double as a wallet. Sunglasses also get a boost when done in sassy pink ($115).
Depending on where you're going, eveningwear can really run the gamut. Chances are, like most major metropolises, a dress that can go from day to night is your best bet. Japanese designer brand Sacai offers cool shapes and interesting construction. This royal blue t-shirt dress has just the right about amount of style and ease ($331.13). If your trip falls during the humid summer months, a pretty and ethereal sun dress ($150 at Aloha Rag) will offer sweet contrast when worn with a distressed denim vest ($220 by Rag & Bone) and futuristic wedge sneaker sandals ($174.95 by Ash). For cocktail bars or nightclubs, try a fitted graphic look like this blue and white knit dress ($39.99 at Mango), perhaps layered with an open-knit sweater ($149.50) and paired with this splurge: a fun "Hold Me" speech bubble leather clutch ($450)
Tsukiji by Day
Tokyo guys don't slouch in the style department. Up your game with a few select pieces. This vintage hula girl print button-down by local label Engineered Garments ($220) is a tongue-in-cheek take on the usual vacationer look. Wear with blue-green Levi 501s ($45) or slim green chinos ($69.50 by Club Monaco). Even with sportswear, look for a more thoughtful design, such as this Raf Simons blue and orange print tee with a structured fit ($365), Nike zip jacket in a vintage look ($80), and black sneakers with clean lines ($65). And tote your iPad around, maybe in this bright blue iPad case by the Japanese avant-garde label Comme des Garcons ($64).
Roppongi by Night
There's no shortage of exciting, young Japanese menswear designers like Undercover's Jun Takahashi (see: a paneled multi-color cotton jersey sweater for $450) or Taka Hayashi's collaboration with Vans (blue and brown sneaks for $171). Perhaps a varsity jacket is jazzed up in lightweight goldenrod ($275) or light purple button-down is made of vintage Japanese print ($168). Men's accessories are worth exploring too, like a stylish brown leather strap watch ($228), painted Levi's vintage belt ($198), or handmade camouflage card case by Maison Takuya ($181.10). Lastly, pull on your toiletries together in his handsomely handmade Roberto Dopp kit, which will last you this trip and then some ($195).
Where to Stay
Tokyo is a vast and complex city, so picking a neighborhood to call home base is a big part of the equation. Shopping hounds will delight in upscale Ginza, where you can book the Four Seasons in the Marinouchi business district. The Peninsula Tokyo hotel is also about a 5-minute walk from Ginza, as well as other major sights.
For travelers who like to be in the thick of things, look no further than the Shibuya district. The Park Hyatt is the top of the heap in the area. Request a high floor if possible and you'll be rewarded with amazing views. Though it's tough to find a bargain in this pricey city, the Citadines Shinjuku Tokyo apartment-hotel is rather affordable with rates from $125. However, despite its name, the hotel is actually on the fringes of the district and is quite a walk from some of the popular restaurants and attractions. Another no-frills option is The Agnes Hotel and Apartments. The rooms are on the small side, but some offer kitchenettes.
