This cool Scandinavian city is high on design, and come summer, its long sunny days make it the perfect place to vacation. Laze the day away in the city's many parks, stroll through Old Town, visit its imposing palaces, or just have a sunset drink on the waterfront. But before you can do all that, you've got to pack. And the pressure's on—Stockholm has some hyper-stylish residents.
Take advantage of the pleasant summers by wearing some of the local labels, like a striped dress by Cheap Monday ($58.19) or saffron yellow silk blouse by Acne ($300), which will mix and match easily with ankle cut jeans ($225) or a textured sweater with elbow patches ($39.99). And if your itinerary includes a walking tour around Old Town, pack a couple pairs of stylish flats, like these cutout Oxfords in bright blue ($280 by Swedish label Minimarket) or black and white daisy sandals ($50).
Sometimes called the Venice of the North—the city includes 14 isles—Stockholm has beautiful walks for dusk and later hours. Dress for dinner too, in a chambray tunic dress ($148), worn with a black nappa slip-on with wood block heel ($255 by Fiel). This understated red clutch ($128) is surprisingly versatile as a contrast or matching piece, like with this black tie-front short suit ($225) or a red floral print blouse ($285) with wide leg jeans. Lastly, add a dab, literally, of local flair by spritzing on this Rose Noir perfume by Stockholm-based beauty brand Byredo, ($145) or throw on this molded wrist cuff by hometown designer Cornelia Webb ($183).
Museums by Day
With plenty of museums to choose from, including the Vasa Museum or the Picasso- and Dali-laden Museum of Modern Art, dress smartly with a pink and blue plaid shirt by Nordic contemporary label Wood Wood ($221.42) layered with this cotton fisherman's sweater in navy for chillier days ($99). Bring along these stylish tortoiseshell shades ($165) for the bright summer sun. Stay comfortable in these broken-in khakis ($29.50) and Stockholm-based WESC shoes that are equal parts chukka and sneaker ($176). And add some wardrobe flexibility by packing this camo-print walk short by the brand ($60)—which stands for We Are the Superlative Conspiracy—and this light gray stripe hoodie by SNS Herning ($315). If you're really up for channeling the local vibe, grab these zany patterned socks by Swedish brand Happy Socks ($12). (Just don't wear them with sandals.)
Sunset Sips and Bites
Stockholm's food, if you're willing to shell out the krona, offers tons of variety. And if you plan to hit up one of the city's eight Michelin-starred restaurants, dress for the fine details rather than flash and dash. Try a pocket crewneck with a contrast olive green detail ($39.50) with straight and slim chinos ($59) (or gray jeans, here by Acne for $245, which work with just about anything) and red suede boots ($195). If you're spending a few nights in the city, pack a few options like a white and light red stripe button-up shirt ($160 by Thomas Pink), and a tongue-in-cheek gray print shirt that's something of a conversation starter ($55). And if you're looking for an option beyond your typical black jacket, try a bomber style, such as this one in burgundy cotton canvas ($200).
Where to Stay
Old Town is close to most of the sights you'll want to check out, which makes it a popular place to start, but most of the better accommodations are a bit further out.
Luxury connoisseurs may prefer the classy yet modern Lydmar Hotel, which hosts its own gallery exhibits and houses an excellent restaurant. The location is within striking distance of both Old Town and the shopping district. Nearby, the Hotel Diplomat (a Fodor's Choice hotel) offers similar neighborhood convenience but at more affordable prices (rates start around $175 per night).
Over in the chic Sodermalm district, Hotel Rival garners rave reviews. Bonus: the bar is a hot spot with a changing DJ line up. If you're into the idea of staying in the neighborhood but on a tighter budget, check out the Bed & Breakfast 4Trappor, which offers basic accommodations but is centrally located.
Of you're looking for a getaway, the Hotel Skeppshomen located on the tiny island of the same name, feels like a real escape. Plus, the 81 rooms are stylishly appointed and eco-friendly.
