Europe Rail Travel Tips: Different Classes to Eurail Passes
With the high cost of air travel this summer, more people are considering the classic European experience of getting around the continent by train—it's not just for backpackers. Throughout Europe the primary means of public transportation between cities is the train as the network of railways is much more extensive than what you find in North America. Whether you found a great flight to a not-so-great city and just need a transfer, or are planning to explore on a grand tour, here are some general factors to consider when traveling in Europe by train.
First Things First: Look at a Map
Start by reviewing rail route options online. In many countries maps are not customarily provided to passengers. You may do best to consult a map on the Internet first or obtain one from a travel agent in your home country.
Understand Europe's "Class" System
Virtually all European rail carriers, including the high-speed ones, operate a two-class system. The difference between first and second class is often marginal, particularly on short-haul regional trains. First class costs substantially more, and is usually a luxury rather than a necessity. In some cases, though, you can only reserve seats in first class, meaning that with a second-class ticket on a full train you may end up standing. The differences in classes are greater on long-haul express trains (such as Eurostars). Some of the poorer European countries retain a third class, but avoid it unless you're an adventure-minded budget traveler.
Know that High Speed = High Cost
Some national high-speed train systems, which see trains traveling at an average speed of 125 mph, have begun to link up to form the nucleus of a pan-European system. On a long journey you still have to change trains a couple of times, as the national railways jealously guard their prerogatives. France, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany are among the nations offering this service. Remember that this service requires reservations, and doesn't come as cheaply as conventional rail service.
Save with Rail Passes
Eurail passes, available for travel in most European countries except Great Britain, can be a good deal if you're planning on lots of train travel. They have to be purchased from home before you travel; for details, see their web site, www.eurail.com. Note, too, that even with a pass, you’ll pay a supplement for riding high-speed trains. There are many types of passes with different time frames and geared to different groups; think carefully before picking one. Here are some of the most popular:
- Global Pass: If you plan to rack up miles, consider this option that includes travel to 21 countries.
- Select Pass: There's a three-, four-, or five-country option.
- Regional Pass: Popular countries are covered such as Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany or France and Italy.
- EurailDrive Pass: Valid for two months, this pass combines a two-day car rental (additional days are available) with 4 or 10 days of train travel. It’s valid in 21 countries, including Austria, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Hungary, and Ireland.
- One Country Pass: For travel with a single country through Eurail. Most national railway systems also have discount passes for travelers making multiple trips.
Follow these Tips at the Station
Automated ticket machines in Europe’s larger towns and cities can switch back and forth between any number of languages. The humans behind the counter may or may not be able to do the same.
In Europe, train platforms in larger towns and cities are divided into sections designated by letters of the alphabet. The sign announcing the next train will often tell you where the first- and second-class carriages will stop, letting you stand in the most convenient part of the platform.

traveling by rail is my favorite way to experience Europe!
in the Fall of 2009, we found that even with the 5-country Eurail Pass, we were required to make reservations for almost every trip regardless of its speed - this required a lot of advanced planning - we purchased these reservations in advance of traveling, paying for ticket reservations to avoid the need to deal with extra transactions at the stations, however, on the few we had not arranged in advance, we found the reservations easy to make and felt more confident that on future trips, we would simply make the arrangements once there...this brings me to an additional conclusion, the cost of each reservation on top of the cost of the Eurail Pass led us to decide that we would not opt to buy the Eurail again, but rather, leave the flexibility to purchase tickets on an as needed basis once we arrive...
High-speed = high cost? NO! It simply means airline-style pricing, that would be far more useful advice to help visitors understand modern rail pricing.
For example, Amsterdam to Paris costs from just 35 euros if you book in advance (as you would with a flight) at www.thalys.com, but more like 90 euros bought just before the train leaves.
Our European high-speed trains offer some fabulou bargains if you prebook your trip. Paris-Nice from 20 euros (40 euros in 1st class) booked at www.tgv-europe.com (say you're from Canada if you're from the US). Amsterdam to Prague on a direct sleeper train from 49 euros with couchette or 79 euros with bed in civilised 2-bed sleeper, booked at www.bahn.de. And don't buy any pass for Italy unless you've checked prices at www.trenitalia.com.
And some poorer countries retain 3rd class? What??! Nope! 3rd class was abolished across the whole of non-Soviet Europe in 1956! Russia and Ukraine retain 'platskartny' as well as 'SV' and 'Kupe' but that's all.
