Check out the local supermarket
That's especially advisable if you're staying put for a while or have a hotel with kitchenette. You'll get better prices here than at hotel shops, and you'll get a good look at cultural habits by seeing what the locals purchase.

Great idea! But don't limit it to long stays. If you are driving, get your lunch at the supermarket. In Europe, you will "go native" by having your own shopping bag. Also, expect to put a coin into a lock on the shopping basket to use it; you will get the coin back when you return the cart to the rack. In the US, people are just beginning to use their own bags. If you say nothing to the check out person, you will get almost one plastic bag for every item. OK, I exaggerate, but you will get lots of bags. Ask for paper bags instead.
