Warning: Border Guards Confiscating China Guidebooks

October 26, 2007

Tourists traveling in China have reported that Fodor's China Guides have been confiscated by Chinese officials, especially around the Vietnam border, because some maps in the book do not include Taiwan as part of China. This is a highly sensitive issue to the Chinese government. If you are crossing into China by land, consider putting a fake cover on the book to make it less recognizable, or even removing the maps in question (inside front cover and pages 8 and 9). In case your book is confiscated, copy down key information and phone numbers ahead of time.
