As you're heading north from Mystic to Bar Harbor, be sure to stop off in Portsmouth NH -- you can divert along Route 1B to enjoy NH's 18 miles of seacoast and stop in Portsmouth -- more restaurant seats than citizens, tax-free shopping and 10 historic sites (National Trust "Distinctive Destination") including Strawbery Banke Museum, the 10-acre living history museum spanning ordinary life in America, 1695-1954. www.strawberybanke.org

Just did this trip last week and it was BEAUTIFUL. Be sure to stop at Nepenthe for lunch along the way - wonderful service, delicious food and spectacular views of the Big Sur coastline!
