Italy’s Cinque Terre has become completely inaccessible by train or car after torrential rains caused extensive damage to one of the country’s most popular vacation spots, affecting an untold number of travelers.

Towns along the Italian Riviera in Liguria are some of the worst hit, including Monterosso al Mare and Vernazza, which have been almost completely wiped out by flash floods and mudslides.

The downpour began Tuesday and lasted through Wednesday afternoon, with rescue workers continuing to look for survivors in the disaster’s wake. Hundreds of people are homeless and many are without electricity. Train service along much of the area’s coast has been suspended.
