At the Constitución Public Library the books aren’t the only tree-based products on display. Chilean architect Sebastian Irarrazaval has designed the entirety of the new library using nearly 100 percent locally-sourced wood. The city of Constitución was devastated by the 2010 earthquake and resulting tsunami and the new library serves a crucial part of the rebuilding efforts.
The coastal city’s close proximity to a number of forestry plantations made the lumber-dominant choice a simple one. The design itself is light and airy with high ceilings and plenty of cozy nooks for patrons to relax and lose themselves in a good book.
