Buddha is back. A 600-year-old statue of the famous sage recently surprised China's Jiangxi Province by surfacing when a local reservoir was drained. They were even more surprised to find an entire ancient village resting deeper underwater beneath the Buddha’s feet.
While the officials who filled the reservoir and submerged this “untapped archaeological treasure trove” 70 years ago aren’t currently scheduled for a round of applause, they may have done the site a favor. Local archaeologists say that the statue and town “could have suffered weathering, oxidation or other risks” if it hadn’t been temporarily lost underwater.
