Fodor's Expert Review Granville Island Hotel

1253 Johnston St., Vancouver, British Columbia, V6H 3R9, Canada

Granville Island is one of Vancouver's most popular destinations, for locals and visitors, but unless you've moored up in a houseboat, the only overnight option is the Granville Island Hotel. The exterior of this offbeat waterfront building is part Mission style, part industrial, but the result is modern and sophisticated. Most guest rooms have water views through full-length windows. Rooms on the top floor have small balconies. The corridor in the east wing has a quirky view overlooking vats at the fashionable Dockside microbrewery downstairs. There is valet parking, but because the island is so popular, you're better off leaving the car behind.

PROS

  • unique island location
  • within steps of great dining and theater
  • free Wi-Fi

CONS

  • island gets busy on weekends
  • walk or use ferry transit to get here
  • some rooms are small
