Palacio Nazarenas
New & Noteworthy

Set in a former Spanish colonial palace and convent in the center of Cuzco, Palazio Nazarenas opened to rave guest reviews in June 2012. Orient Express, under the supervision of Peru's National Institute of Culture, undertook the extensive renovation, which involved rehabilitating the original palace buildings, removing and rebuilding some newer additions, and excavating pre-Inca and Inca walls and artifacts unearthed along the way. Though the hotel has every modern amenity—from iPads in the guest rooms to the city's first outdoor heated pool—its history has been thoughtfully preserved and alluded to throughout the design. In the spa, six treatment rooms have glass floors exposing original Inca stonework, and Incan artifacts are displayed in the library, housed in the palace's former chapel. Spanish colonial murals and friezes have been restored, and whitewashed walls and hand-carved timber balconies, though not original, stay true to the property's heritage.
