My friend, who has lived in Paris for over 3 years, says that there are no large sizes to be found [she is about a size 12 or 14].

I'll readily admit to not being an expert in this field. But I distinctly remember seeing a couple of shops with names in French that I stopped to think about and was amused by what they meant --"big is beautiful" or something to that effect. And it was clear by the mannequins in the windows that they specialized in larger sizes.

Daph, I'd suggest if your friend is really looking for some, she's not looking hard enough, or else she's eliminating them because they don't have the style or type clothes she is specifically interested in.

I wondered what Tat was up to as I could tell by that link's "name" that it was just her personal link. There are been one or more threads on here about plus-size stores in Paris; I remember because I posted a link to a French website for such which gave addresses of many (which was named Ronde et Jolie). Daph's friend is wrong because I know where there are some. Another new one I saw last time I was there is on the discount shopping street, rue Alesia, in the first block west of the Alesia metro stop (on the south side) and it was a fairly new and large one with a lot of stock. The major department stores will have some stuff, although not a big selection--they certainly have clothes in size 12. Even Monoprix has some items around that size.

However, I certainly wouldn't go to Paris to plan a major shopping expedition for plus-size clothes, as that wouldn't be the best place for that.

I don't really know if Tat or anyone is looking for such stores or not. If so, I can find out the name of that one on Alesia, which is a good discount shopping street anyway (lots of good men's designer outlets, also).

Hi,
I assume the size 12-14 being spoken about is US. I am a 10-12 UK and would be very unhappy if I was thought of as a plus size. Does anyone know the difference between US and UK sizing?

I don't know the difference but I do know that size 12 is not a plus size.
I am tall and wear a 12.

A UK size 12 = a US size 10

Here's a basic guide to women's clothing size equivalents :
UK 8 10 12 14 16 18 20

US 6 8 10 12 14 16 18

Continental 38 40 42 44 46 48 50

Of course actual sizing will vary amongst designers and manufactures.

The size (and length of sleeves/cutting) depends also of the manufacturing country. In Finnish and Scandinavian made clothes I wear 36 or 38, but if I buy French it has to be 40, and if Italian it has to be 42.

A good point about the length of clothing as well as the size. I really loved shoe shopping in Scandinavia - my size - 9 - is what they put in the window for samples. (I think they use 6 in the US) And it's the first time in my life that I ever - at 5'9" - felt short.

I'm pretty sure Un Jour Ailleurs (a women's clothing brand with branches all over France and several shops in Paris) carries clothes up to size 18 or 20 American (whatever the European equivalent is--50? 52?). They specialize in well made, moderately priced, slightly conservative but stylish separates/business clothes. I have a few things from them that have held up very well (bonus: almost everything they sell is machine washable).
Of course, you could also look for a Marina Rinaldi, part of the Max Mara brand and specializing in "femmes rondes." Expensive, though.
Generally, though, it seems German and Austrian stores offer a far better selection of clothing in larger sizes--you see plenty of plus size women in those two countries.
Daph, I'm surprised your friend hasn't tried Un Jour Ailleurs. I'm sure she'd find plenty of clothes in her size.

There is a plus size women's shop near the St. Paul metro stop. They had nice looking clothes in a variety of sizes and not priced outrageously. If I recall correctly, it was on Rue Rivoli and also had a door on the parallel street behind it. I am terrible about knowing the direction, but come up out of the metro and walk in the direction away from the Bastille. It is in the first or second block on the same side of the street. I was there last summer and assume it would still be there.
