What is going on!
We are planning a week on October 18
to October 25, in Manhattan, and
the Hotel Prices are Incredible!!!
$390 - 550,600, My God, what is
going on....... We are going on those dates, because we are going
first to a New Jersey wedding.
Please Help!!! any suggestions??

Stay in New Jersey and take day trips to NYC.

These prices are "nothing special" in Manhattan.

NYC hotels are expensive and October is high season. If you can find something for $390, take it.

I know....I was shellshocked last year for MY October trip. I think there are a lot of conventions that month and it is supply and demand. I ended up staying in a hostel my first night (11 pm arrival so I didn't want to waste my money) for only $32/night and then moved the next day to the Gaansevoort which was $600-700/night. The hostel was really roughing it though. You know you're in trouble when the La Quinta Inn is in the $300s!

Actually, $390 sounds pretty cheap for a Manhatten hotel...

You are going to be there a long time, which means you get the most expensive, mid-week prices. Try breaking up the week between two hotels or two set of dates to see if it gets cheaper.

NYC is an expensive place. Lots of people on expense accounts are there on business.

I just checked and my current favorite "bargain" hotel in NYC, the Park South, is available that week except for the night of the 23rd, starting at $309/night (I got a AAA rate of $299 for my upcoming stay the previous week). I stayed there last year and thought it was a good value for NYC in the fall. Rooms are small of course but the rates include a continental breakfast and Wifi.

successful bids for rooms for 2
on Priceline. Also Hotwire.
Much less than $390!

My favorite bargain in NYC, the Red Roof Inn at 6 W 32nd St (across from the Empire State Building) is available @ $300. Clean; recently renovated in warm soothing colors; and pleasant staff.

You might try the Hotel Grand Union www.hotelgrandunion.com. The rates for your week are showing $175ntdbl, don't know if they have availability, so you might check there.

The Excelsior is $309 on a link from Kayak. Hampton Inn Seaport is $339 and possibly less with an AAA discount.

I see more tourists than last year already and September just started! Hotels know they can get away with the increased prices.

Besides October heading into major high season, the city is absolutely packed with European visitors - shopping madly away with out pitiful dollar prices. That means rates will only continue to rise and cheaper rooms be gobbled up - so reserve NOW or the prices you see will be gone. And Priceline is likely to have little inventory, since most hotels can fill their rooms at full price.

Grab anything decent around $300 -you will not do better in Manhattan - unless you look for an apartment (and then you need to be really careful of scams).

FYI - our corporate travel policy for visitor to NYC is $495 per night Jan to Aug and $575 from Oct to Dec. That assumes a standard business class hotel (Hilton, Sheraton etc) - nothing luxurious at all.

I like Skyine Hotel in Hell's Kitchen.

And checking different dates is a great idea. Downtown business hotels will drop rates on the weekend, while midtown will rise.

I usually start at kayak.com to get an idea of where I stand.

If you can be flexible as to where you stay, try Priceline. Figure you will have to bid slightly over half the price shown to get a room. I just got the Affina Manhattan on Priceline for a September weekend for $210 a night while all other similar hotels were listing (at a discount!) at $390 to $790. It took me many tries and I am fussy about star levels (no Days Inn for me!)

try down in Soho or Brooklyn. Will be somewhat cheaper than Midtown. I find the best bet is to stay in NJ and commute in. Somewhat of a hassle but even with tolls, parking you will probably save $100+ per night.
