$100 or less in New York City for Doctor's Visits
A friend told me about this site, so I am taking a chance you might be able to help me. I have a medical condition that requires twice yearly visits to my specialist located in Midtown Manhattan (East). I live out of town and my treatments are very expensive. We can only afford $100 or less for our accomodation. Last time we stayed in Brooklyn at a B&B and, suffice to say, it was horrible.
I don't have access to a computer all the time, so Priceline would be difficult for me to master. What can you suggest for me?

I don't know where you receive your medical care, but the Helmsley Medical Tower on the corner of York Ave. and 70th street is affiliated with the Cornell University Medical Center/ Lenox Hill Hospital complex. It is $160 per night, but every studio has a kitchenette, which would possibly save the $60 on meals. I would also check into whether or not they charge the standard tax on rooms. If they don't, it would definitely be a bargain, as those taxes are in excess of 17% in most places now.
Their phone number is: 212.472.8400.
If I can think of anything else I will post it here. My husband did his surgery residency in NYC and we lived across the street from the Helmsley. Good luck finding something!

If you have any access to a computer at a library, check out this site, posted by a woman who wrote about her experiences on a medical trip to NYC and has lots of advice:
http://www.scubamom.com/nyc/
She suggests the Helmsley as one place she and her husband stayed, but also recommends Lyden Gardens. It is less than a mile away, is a bit older, but also has kitchenettes:
Lyden Gardens Hotel at 215 East 64th Street between 2nd and 3rd. (212) 355-1230 or (800) ME-SUITE or FAX (212) 758-7858
Oops, just checked for a Lyden Gardens website and apparently the hotel has undergone a transformation and is now the Affinia Suites, a new look and a bit pricier. However, I would still call the hotel directly and see what kind of rate you can get. I find that speaking directly to someone at the hotel gets a better rate than a booking service. Will put my thinking cap on and post again if more ideas surface---

Okay, here's some information from the Sloan-Kettering's website. They are just down the street from CUMC/Lenox Hill, and have a host of suggestions:
Budget Hotels that require public transportation to Upper East Side:
The Amsterdam Inn
340 Amsterdam Avenue (at 76th Street)
New York, NY 10024
25-minute bus ride to 1275 York Avenue
The Murray Hill Inn
143 East 30th Street (at Lexington Avenue)
New York, NY 10016
15-minute bus ride to Rockefeller Outpatient Pavilion at 160 East 53rd Street
The Union Square Inn
209 East 14th Street (At 2nd Ave)
New York, NY 10003
25-minute bus ride to Rockefeller Outpatient Pavilion at 160 East 53rd Street
Rates are from $79-$149 depending on the season. Memorial Sloan-Kettering patients are eligible for a 10 percent discount. Services include 24-hour front desk service; daily maid service; fax and message center and internet service. The rooms have cable TV and air conditioning. Special lower rates for long-term stays are available.
According to Sloan Kettering, that hospital has a special arrangement with certain hotels for a lower patient rate. It is certainly worth talking to your doctor, his nurse, or the hospital or clinic's social worker, who should have a similar list. The Helmsley does not charge tax for medical guests, according to the Sloan-K website, but I would check to make sure.
Other suggestions:
Midtown East Courtyard by Marriott at 866 Third Avenue is right around the corner. Memorial Sloan-Kettering patients receive a 10 percent discount off their lowest available rate. Room rates start at $179 and go up to $399. These rates do not include tax. To make reservations call 800-894-6380
The Bentley Hotel, located at 500 East 62nd Street (at York Avenue), is just a five-minute walk from our 1275 York Avenue facilities. Room rates range from $125 to $200. On Fridays and Saturdays there is an additional charge of $50. Rates do not include tax. Onsite parking is also available. The hotel's telephone number is 212-644-6000.
The Habitat Hotel, which is approximately a 15-minute walk from 1275 York Ave, is located at 130 East 57th Street, at the corner of 57th Street and Lexington Avenue. Rooms start a rate of $75 and go up to $165. Rates do not include tax. The telephone number is 212-753-8841.
None of these seem to exactly fit your criteria. I would definitely try to get in touch with a hospital social worker who undoubtedly has much more info.

Hospitality for Family and Friends
This organization is available to help out-of-town family and friends of hospitalized patients who are in need of a hotel room in Manhattan, but cannot afford the rates. They must first speak to the patient's social worker. He/she will then call Hospitality for Family and Friends, which has an arrangement with many fine hotels throughout the city that donate rooms for this purpose for one or two nights at most. There can only be one- to two-day advance notice for a room. The social worker connects the family to the organization so that arrangements can made.
This has been pasted directly from the Presbyterian Hospital's website. I would think you could access this program through any social worker--but I don't know. There may be a similar program for people who can pay a heavily discounted rate and still make the reservations well in advance. Worth checking out!

I too would use the hospital social services staff first for rooming suggestions. If that yields nothing of use to you and you're willing to consider a hostel type accomodations, the HI/AYH facility at 103rd & Amsterdam, 2 short blocks from #1/#9 subway is good; I've stayed several times. Rates are per persson and start at $29 for shared facilities; private rooms start at $129.

NYC has become outrageously expensive. Anything in Manhattan for $100 or less may either be terrible or require shared bath facilities. You don't say what the duration of the twice yearly visits are, but if a week, renting an apartment might be a less expensive option. Here's a site that rents apts on east 52 st starting at $165/night
http://www.trpproperties.com/
If it's just for a night or two, the Pickwick Arms might not be bad.

Wow, thanks all so for for the nice response. I am doing alternative treatments for my illness and am not going through a hospital. My doctor is located in the lower east side. This would probably make me ineligible for much of the advice offered here.
One thing I forgot to add is, due to my condition, I am unable to share a bathroom. This precludes us staying at a hostel, for instance.
My friend did find two possibilities for me: The Chelsea Inn and Stay the Night B&B. I will check out all your possibilities as well.

I'm glad there were so many suggestions for affordable, medical-stay accomodations. Please come back to the site and post what you find, and eventually use, as your information might be valuable to someone else in the same situation. Best of luck!

Special thanks to kswl for hooking me up with Hospitality for Family and Friends. I have been in contact with them and they will be able to help me on my future visits to my specialist.
If anyone else is interested, here is their website:

Second Home on Second is a b and b in the east village that has some private rooms. Don't know whether it would be under $100 but maybe close. The Cosmopolitan is a good budget hotel in Tribeca.
It would have helped if you had indicated the lower eastside location to start. You had said midtown east which put us all on the wrong track. Good luck!
