AmaCerto Review

One of the Ama fleet's newest and sleekest ships is the 164-passenger AmaCerto, launched in 2012. As slick as a Vegas casino, the gleaming, boldly colored interior tempts with a small pool, a gym, generous-sized staterooms, and marble bathrooms. Itineraries tour Austria, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Hungary, and Slovakia. The Black Sea Voyage and 23-day Grand Danube Cruise are popular standouts.

A leader in its niche, winning eight industry awards for Best River Cruise Line, this specialty 15-vessel cruise line has exceptional staterooms and itineraries that showcase not only Europe, but also Vietnam and Zambezi. Its Austrian founder worked with several of the other major river-cruise companies before launching his own company in 2002. Since then, AmaWaterways has introduced nine new ships in Europe: Amabella, Amacello, Amadagio, Amadante, Amadolce, Amalegra, Amalyra, Amaverde, and Amavida. In 2013, the yacht-inspired Amaprima and Amacerto join the fleet. The refurbished 212-passenger Amakatarina cruises between Moscow and St. Petersburg.

AmaWaterways’ luxury ships are among the newest of the European river cruisers operating today. Designed exclusively for the English-speaking market, the ships have staterooms equipped with flat-screen TVs and Internet, French balconies on the top two decks, elevator, whirlpool, and free bicycles for exploration ashore. Impressive public rooms use designer fabrics, chic furniture, and subtle lighting for an upscale boutique hotel atmosphere.

They operate a wide range of itineraries in Europe on the Rhine, Main, Danube, and Mosel rivers; and in Russia on the Volga, Svir, and Neva rivers. The company also offers Christmas-market cruises from late November through December. Reserve April to see tulip blossoms cruising Holland and Belgium.

Only if you like a hard bed

My cousin and I sailed the AmaCerto to the Christmas markets along the Rhine. The service and amenities on board were very good. We enjoyed all of the ports and excursions and had sufficient time in each location. When a problem with a lock made our ship late arriving in Strasbourg AmaWaterways was able to extend our time in the city. Guides were very good and the tours enjoyable. We always had time on our own in each port. Our compact cabin

with balcony was very comfortable and the bathroom well designed. The shower was very nice and more spacious than I expected. There was an odd window from the cabin into the bathroom with a view straight on to the toilet! You could flip a switch and the window became opaque but still shed light into the cabin. Peculiar design. Unfortunately the beds will keep me from taking another cruise with Ama. The mattresses seemed to be foam of some sort wrapped in vinyl and were very hard. We spoke to the hotel manager and staff provided an additional layer of foam between the mattress and the sheet but this was not a luxury level bed. I hope to take another river cruise this time with my husband but will be looking at other lines.
