| Choosing Your Line & Ship |
|
Every year major North American cruise lines satisfy the seasonal demand for what amounts to an old-fashioned Grand Tour afloat by repositioning a large portion of their Caribbean fleets to Europe. They join European-based ships that are ported in the Baltic for the summer and the Mediterranean year-round. The largest vessels generally stick to predictable routes that include major cities along the coasts such as Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Athens, or those, like Rome, close enough to visit during a port call. Small to midsize ships offer the advantage of visiting ports off the beaten path of the large ships and can call at intriguing destinations like the less-visited Greek Isles and jet-set favorite Ibiza without the necessity of tendering passengers ashore.
