Style: Sailing Ship

Bring your blanket and pillow up on deck if you want to sleep under the stars.

Barefoot is preferred, but if you must wear shoes, make sure the soles are appropriate. Topsider-style boat shoes are best.

You can swap books with other passengers, but there's not much in the way of reading materials on board.

The world's largest fleet of tall ships evolved from a modest beginning -- a single 19-foot sloop, The Hangover, on which legendary company founder Mike Burke sailed his friends from South Florida to the Bahamas. Each Windjammer ship is unique and has a distinctive pedigree. Rescued from the scrappers when no one else recognized their potential, each vessel has been carefully renovated to sail the far reaches of the Caribbean and anchor in pristine waters where traditional cruise ships can't go.

Choose If ...

You wouldn't be caught dead on a frou-frou cruise ship.

You enjoy active water sports, especially snorkeling and diving.

You have always dreamed of being a pirate.

Don't Choose If ...

Decorum is paramount to you. If someone suggests it, fellow passengers might even moon a big cruise ship.

You have a preexisting or potentially serious medical condition. There's no well-equipped infirmary on board.

You can't entertain yourself.

Fares for Windjammer cruises look pretty reasonable, and they are. But here's the scoop: count the length of the days and nights because they aren't all technically one-week sailings. However, the Stow-Away option offered for the night before official sailing day is a good deal, allowing you to board the evening before you sail, have dinner, and spend the night for $55 per person. However, it's now going away -- in a sense. With costs rising, Windjammer announced price increases in late 2005, with a twist. To offset higher fares, the line no longer charges for port fees or the Stow-Away night.
