This small division of the Carnival Corporation is about as hip as a cruise line can get and still be a cruise line. Headquartered and marketed in the UK, the line's motto promises to be "the cruise for people who don't do cruises." Quite simply, Ocean Village cruises are flexible and relatively unstructured, although the company does follow the typical British holiday scheme of being a total package deal, if that's what you desire.

While the two vessels in the Ocean Village fleet aren't brand-new, they have been extensively refurbished and now have many of the amenities of much newer ships. They're also very family-friendly, with many supervised activities for children and teens.

Food

Most dining is serve-yourself buffet-style, and dishes lean heavily toward British favorites with a sprinkling of Mediterranean- and Asian-influenced items for variety. Vegetarian options can also be found. Alternative dining spots with waiter service include menus inspired by British celebrity chef James Martin; these restaurants carry an extra charge. A popular children's tea is served every afternoon, and baby food can be provided upon advance request. There is a charge for items ordered from room service, but every cabin has tea and coffee makers.

Fitness & Recreation

Each ship has swimming pools, a well-equipped gym, and exercise classes -- some complimentary, others for a small fee -- as well as deck spaces designated for joggers. Spas offer a typical menu of massages, facials, and exotic treatments. Mountain bikes can be rented for trips ashore. In a unique twist on activities, you can learn to juggle or fly on a trapeze in circus workshops.

Your Shipmates

Ocean Village cruises draw mostly active British singles and couples from their 30s to 50s, as well as families of all ages.

Dress Code

Quite simply, the only requirement is that you wear something. Ocean Village cruises are very casual, and there is never a need for formal attire, although you are free to dress up if you choose, and most people choose not to dress up.

Service

Service is friendly and accommodating.

Tipping

Basic gratuities are included in the fare, but additional tips are cheerfully accepted if a crew member performs a special service for you. There are no suggested tipping guidelines.
