Numerous connecting staterooms and suites can be combined to create multicabin family rooms.

Freestyle Cruising offers the flexibility of dining with anyone you choose and when you actually wish to eat.

The newest ships in the NCL fleet sport hull art -- huge murals that make them easily recognizable from afar.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) set sail in 1966 with an entirely new concept: regularly scheduled Caribbean cruises from the then obscure port of Miami. Good food and friendly service combined with value fares established NCL as a winner for active adults and families. With the introduction of the now-retired SS Norway in 1979, NCL ushered the era of cruises on mega-size ships. Innovative and forward-looking, NCL has been a cruise-industry leader for four decades.

Choose If ...

Doing your own thing is your idea of a real vacation. You could almost remove your watch and just go with the flow.

You want to leave your formal dress-up wardrobe at home.

You're competitive. There's always a pick-up game in progress on the sports courts.

Don't Choose If ...

You don't like to pay extra for food on a ship. The best specialty restaurants have extra charges.

You don't want to stand in line. There are lines for nearly everything.

You don't want to hear announcements. They're frequent on these ships -- and loud.

When considering an NCL cruise, keep in mind that the ships weren't cut from a cookie-cutter mold, and they differ widely in size and detail. Although all are brightly appointed and attempt to offer a comparable experience, the older ships just don't have the panache or the numerous Freestyle dining selections found on the newer, purpose-built ships. Drawbacks for families are the smallish standard cabins that lack adequate storage on the older ships and the absence of self-service laundry facilities on most ships. On the plus side, the newest vessels have many options for families, including large numbers of interconnecting staterooms that make them ideal for even super-size clans. By 2009 NCL will have one of the newest fleets at sea following the introduction of two large, new vessels in 2007; older mid-size ships are being transferred to parent Star Cruises in Asia.
