While visiting Stresa, Italy we saw an Amphicar in the parking lot. We took lots of pictures of the car while it was parked. Later we saw this amphibious auto actually tooling around Lake Maggiore. Amphicars are quite rare, seeing one on land and in the water was a real treat!

This was a rare moment in the small piazza where the gorgeous gem of the Trevi Fountain hides amongst the buildings. We rounded the corner around midnight and found it almost deserted unlike earlier in the day when you couldn't even get close to it without bumping into the multitudes. We were able to admire the splendour of the sculptures and the magical quality of the fountain at night.

My wife and I had chartered a boat for a day's trip around the Isle of Capri. Our boat captain dropped us off on a steep, rocky outcropping to admire the White Grotto. While strolling back to our hotel one evening, we saw a line in front of a nondescript restaurant near Piazza Navona. Many in line were locals. Intrigued, we went back the next night for dinner and enjoyed one of the delightful evenings ever. Fine dining? Not exactly. Great food? Oh yes. Fun place to go? You got it! Check out Baffetto's pizza for some rather unusual (and delicious) dining options - such as pizza with fried eggs! All served with beer or your choice of beverage, along with a healthy dose of friendliness and comradarie.

It was fun to see the "men behind the scenes" that make Venice so special. These men seem to be taking a break from what to them is routine work, but brings such joy and magic to the people who visit their city. I hope they realize how much they contribute to the tourist treasures!. I wish that tourist had gotten out of the way.

We had spent the day in beautiful Florence, Italy. The ride back to ship was another hour and we were stopped on this bridge in traffic. I remember thinking to myself, what an amazing place, surrounded by beautiful old buildings, mountains and water. The sky was so dramatic!I wish I could have spent more time taking in the view, but I only had about 10 seconds to take a picture before the bus started moving again. Those ten seconds made my memorable day of traveling in Italy complete!

Unique in all the world, Trulli houses origins are lost in antiquity. Alberobello is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in "1,000 Places To See Before You Die" because it has the highest concentration of Trulli houses in Puglia. As you can see from the power lines, the Trulli are still used as homes for people in the region. I first saw Trulli in 1966 as a summer student and finally was able to return in May 2007 and bring my wife, Mary, to see these magical houses.

This Restaurant was Divine. I dined here all alone. I didn't speak Italian and the Waiter didn't speak English. We got by somehow. Lots of staring and smiles. The food was Fantastic and I was there for hours. I can still hear the stones crunching as I walked back out to the sidewalk.

Civita di Bagnoregio is the "Dying City". This town, with only 14 year round residents, is literally crumbling away, day by day. On a hot day, it was treacherous to walk up what seemed like a vertical, mile long pathway, but we were soon captivated by the town's charm and hidden stories.

This is one of my favourite places in the city to people watch at any time of day. In the early morning you can watch the locals on their way to work. During the day you can watch the tourists as they try to figure out where they are and where they are going. As a mathematician and an art-enthusiast, I love Leonardo da Vinci. While studying in Italy, I was able to see many of his great works in several different cities, but the most exciting experience was actually visiting the town of Vinci in Tuscany. The city itself is a wonderful example of small-town Tuscany, and you can actually hike a short distance to the house where Leonardo da Vinci was born and in which he grew up. This picture was taken during that hike.

I shot this on the terrace of the Grand Hotel Timeo, Taormina's first hotel, built circa 1873. A section of the old Greek theatre (Teatro Greco) can be seen in the background. When I looked down and saw this grillwork, I was reminded that even ordinary items were elaborately embellished. People who had to work below street level, still had need for fresh air, and I assumed that these grilles were their method for allowing warming air to escape. Or perhaps, the building was heated from below the floor, and this was an opening to heat the room. This simple grate, called to mind that there is little new under the sun.

Just finally seeing what was on movies and shows a reality. I would have never believed i would ever see such a monument that is so popular and unique. Its a part of the past that we seek answers from today.There was crowds and crowds of people surrounding it and waiting hours inline just to see the inside. Italy is surrounded with ruins but this is one of the biggest and most intack. I would love to adventure there again just to take it all in again.

We were on a family vacation in Amalfi Coast. We stopped in the small village of Vetri because our daughter once had a teacher with that name that she admired very much. The town has no known tourist areas. We were walking down a small side street, turned a corner and come upon this beautiful tiled wall depicting the fisherman of the village. It really gets to the heart of the Amalfi Coast. Not the tourist stores and all the trappings the Americans see, but this simple and beautiful wall, tucked into this proud village.

We traveled in Italy for 12 days....the last 12 of the World Cup when Italy won. Everywhere we went we saw groups sitting outside in front of huge TVs and we got involved. When Italy kicked the penalty kick to beat Australia, our tour bus was stopped on the streets of Sorrento so we too could see a big screen TV and we screamed along with all the locals. A special highlight of our visit was the Italian love for their soccer.

All the time we were slowly making our way through the Vatican museum, we would go into more and more rooms and I kept thinking, "And what's this now, is this the Basilica, the Sistine Chapel?" But no, it was still just the museum - it goes on forever and is just as beautiful as the more famous rooms. By the time you see it all you have a definate crick in your neck from all the beautiful ceilings.

I saw this little dog wandering in a shop as I walked through the honey colored buildings of Rome's quaint Trastevere neighborhood. I kept watching and waiting, hoping he'd pop out where I could see him and, as if on cue, he walked out and sat in the doorway to watch me go by. To me, he captured the essence of this warm, ivy dripped, delightful slice of Rome.

It was our last day in Italy and we boated over to Capri and rented scooters for the day. The day was perfect and blissful and as we made our way back to the ferry, we stopped for a glimpse of i Faraglioni from Marina Piccola. To me, this moment captured the vivacious color and drama that is Capri.

We spent a beautiful evening in Positano and as we rounded a bend in the road, saw a storm brewing in the sunset. The image was staggeringly beautiful and, to me, captured all the romance and poetry that is Positano.

We only had one day to see Rome. It was raining but we powered on, not willing to miss a thing. As the storms blew past, I saw this image in a puddle left by the downpour and realized that this glorious city was just as beautiful seen through the rain as it was on a perfect day.

We had done a tough hike from Castiglione to Ravello over to Pontone down through the Valle de Ferriere and to Amalfi. We then walked the coast road back to Castiglione, hot and tired. When this sight popped into view as we rounded a bend in the road, all the aches in my body washed away with the sheer beauty of the moment.

We were leaving the Belvedere Hotel in San Leonino. The gates opened for our car, and we got a wonderful view of the hills around us. What a great memory on our last day!

Our car was at the bottom of the drive and we had to climb to the top to the hotel entrance, dragging our luggage. It was raining, but when we reached the top, the sun came out and illuminated the Chianti hills. We took a much needed break with a glass of wine, admiring the views.

The road to Cortona was winding and steep. We were afraid to look down, concentrating on safely climbing the hills. We stopped to let a group of bicyclers pass, and were amazed at the beauty of the chapel and surrounding hills. The view was breathtaking! Glad we got this shot.

This was on our honeymoon and we were taking a day trip by boat from Positano around Capri. It was September but the weather was sunny and warm. They water was as blue as can be. The sites around Capri are amazing and easily seen by boat. This was a great way to take in the view.

We ended our Italy trip in Venice, so we were pretty much running on E. We mostly just walked around, took in all the beauty, sampled all the cuisine and enjoyed our last few days in Italy. Every moment in Cinque Terre was memorable! The moment we got off the train we regretted not staying here more than one night. The hike was a great way to see each city (and to get a great workout). My husband and I were on our first trip to Italy for our 2nd anniversary and fell in love all over again at this church. The ambiance, the view, the romance and the fact that it was hidden away in the hill made it all so special! This colonnaded enclosure, near the Rialto Bridge, is where the daily fish market is held. We entered soon after the market closed. The smell of fish, the eerily quiet timing, and the bright red/green hues in an otherwise grey structure, made for an enjoyably surreal experience.

I was pregnant and wanted to get in one final trip to Europe before our newest little one arrived. We traveled from Denmark to Sweden, down the German Rhine, Switzerland Italy and back home to San Diego, CA. All this, with me pregnant, my husband, my three year old son, my mother, and my father in law. The entire trip was by Eurorail. This is a photo of my mother and my son, during thier first trip to Italy. My son is the first mate gondolier. I have this photo in sepia blown up to 18x24" in my son's bedroom. We found the Rivetto B&B on a whim while surfing the Internet for agri-tourism. This photo was taken from the grounds of the winery, just outside Alba and near Serralunga, offering a picturesque view of a nearby village along with incredible hillsides full of grapes ready for harvest. Between fabulous Barbaresco and Barolo wines, the memories associated with this photo are ones I will cherish.

Santa Margherita is a fabulous town on the Italian Riviera, offering something for everyone... a vibrant, bustling life within a seaside resort. With a breathtaking promenade as its focal point, the area bustles with tourists, shopkeepers, and friendly locals who are more than willing to help an eager American polish their Italian accent and verb connotations. This photo was taken on a ferry and is memorable because it reminds me how every picture – regardless of the photographer’s skills -- came out looking like a postcard simply due to the beautiful landscape.

Portofino is a tiny, but absolutely gorgeous gem on the Italian Riviera. We stayed in Santa Margherita but caught the “Beach Bus” down to this little village for an afternoon of exploration. The photo is memorable because it reminds me of that small village, where we found excellent food, beautiful views, and the playground of the rich and famous. On the far left of this photo you can see The Cyan, a large and luxurious yacht belonging to U2’s The Edge and rumored to cost some 12 million Pounds. That was fun to see.

Riomaggiore in the Cinque Terre was among our first adventures on a recent trip to Italy. Staying in Santa Margherita, the Hotel Alberge offered a free roundtrip train ticket to the area for its guests. Traveling as a foursome, this was one of our first pictures and was memorable because of the initial opportunity to sample the sunshine, see the beautiful towns of the Cinque Terre, and enjoy the hospitality of its inhabitants.

Bergamo is an untouristy gem in the north of Italy. Just a few miles from Milan yet otherwise a world away. The old town is a cobbled maze of medieval streets, packed with cafes, incredible restaurants and mouth watering pizzerias like the one in this photo.
