Show Us Your Hawaii Recent Entries

How did you experience Hawai'i? Did you catch a wave in Waikiki? In Maui, did you hike down into Haleakala's massive crater to see firsthand how powerful the earth's exhalations can be? Or did you simply lounge on the beautiful and isolated beaches of Kaua'i?

Whatever your Hawai'i, share your top photos and the stories behind them of how you experienced a recent trip to Hawai'i for a chance to see your photo in the next edition of Fodor's Hawai'i, a full-color guide.

One grand prize winner will have his/her photograph featured in Fodor's Hawai'i and will receive a suite of Fodor's latest full-color guides. Ten runners-up will win two Fodor's guides of their choice. In addition, if any photographs are selected to be included in a Fodor's guide, those entrants will also receive a complimentary copy of the guide in which their photo appears.

Celebrating our 40th, we had been fairly active for a week and decided to kick-back all day in a Cabana around the Serenity Pool, absorbing the view, reading and listening to Hawaiian music, sipping on an occassional Mai Tai or Blue Hawaii, and gliding into the next day when we had to leave paradise. Best $100 we spent all week !

Being from Arizona I was surprised to see a beach that reminded me of the red rocks in Sedona. The trek here is not for those afraid of heights. The 10 minutes walk is on a path no wider than three feet overlooking some of the best and scariest views on Maui. When we arrived there were a handful of sunbathers there, all nude. Every view was a postcard!

Every view was a postcard!

At age 45, I found myself divorced, raising two wonderful children. By chance, I was introduced to a man, who 17 months later became my husband, best friend, and wonderful stepfather to my kids. For our honeymoon, July 4, 2009, we traveled to Maui. My husband handled all the arrangements and as we were walking up to the 4th floor of the hotel, I glanced out of the open breezeway and looked out onto the water. I stopped for a brief moment to catch my breath at this view. My husband and I stood there in awe of the beauty of nature, both so thankful for the beginning of our beautiful life together as husband and wife.

I am mesmerized by ocean waves. My husband and I were walking along the beach just as the sun was setting, and we came upon these two chairs with towels left there by someone. The golden colors of the towels, the chairs, and the sand, with the glow of the setting sun made the moment very special and romantic.

Mauna Kea Observatory

The drive to the Mauna Kea Summit to see the world's largest astronomical observatory was rough unpaved, extremely steep, and dizzying. It was a great memorable adventure to the top. To know that these huge white ball shaped buildings contain several different kinds of telescopes shared and operated by astronomers from eleven countries was interesting. It was like we were on top of the world, and these huge observatories were dwarfed by the immense size of the mountain.

I wanted to see the most recent lava flow into the ocean. I learned that the best viewing area was at the end of the Pahoa Kalapana Rd. past the Keauohana Forest Reserve. I was thrilled to be able to get close enough to see the red hot fire from the lava flowing into the ocean and sizzling with each wave hitting the flowing lava, creating huge plumes of smoke and steam.

We came to Hawaii to experience the culture and lifestyle in Hawaii. We spent our last morning in Maui at the Maui Ocean Center. It was well worth the time.
