Zora Neale Hurston's Florida

We are arriving in Orlando two days before our daughter and her family. We want to go to Eatonville and visit places related to the author Zora Neale Hurston. Any ideas about where to stay or eat and what to see?

We are just 1/2 miles from the Zora Neale Hurston Museum on Kennedy Blvd in Eatonville. It is rather small musuem but a good resource for information about her. There is also a walking tour of Eatonville, and maps are available at that museum. Don't miss going to the Maitland Art Center, just a short distance away. They just opened two Eatonville exhibits - Images of Eatonville, then and now and Founding of Eatonville. Not sure when you are going, but the first is open until 9/29 and the Founding exhibit is until 10/6.

Eatonville is essentially part of Orlando on the north side as just an area now, so you might not easily orient yourself. But as for hotels, you can easily stay in Maitland, Altamonte Springs, etc. - really that's where you will find them anyway, and they are in the same area.

I'd like to suggest some places to stay, but given the plethora of choices, maybe not a good idea. Can you let us know which properties or areas you are considering?

THere is not too much else to do in Eatonville, but Maitland has teh Audubon Birds of Prey Center, Maitland Art Center, Maitland Historical Museums, and Waterhouse Residence Museum. We are also right next to Winter Park and much to do there, including a wonderful Tiffany museum - Morse Museum.

Since one of the posters on this thread is thurstonbb, who is half a mile from the museum, I have a feeling he or she knows about it...

Since they're not allowed to advertise, check tripadvisor... 25 out of 26 reviews rate it excellent.
