Zion/Bryce/North Rim, best place to fly into?

If we want to visit all of these parks, which is the best major airport to fly into from NYC? Also, what would be the best route and in what order would you recommend visiting the parks? Thank you!

Probably cheapest would be to fly into Las Vegas. We rented a van and camping equipment in Vegas and then drove to Red Rock Canyon, then Zion, Bryce, and then the North Rim. (Then around east to the south rim, and back to Vegas via Hoover Dam). Stayed about half the time in the campgrounds.

I agree that Las Vegas will be the best place to fly into for those locations and probably be the cheapest in cost too.

As for route, I'd do either Bryce or N. Rim first, then the other and save Zion for last. We like saving Zion for last because we think it's the best From Zion you are only 3 hours away from Las Vegas.

I know you were thinking about other parks before, have you ruled Lake Powell and Captiol Reef? I ask because the would make a difference on the route.

We did this trip last May (with helpful advice from Utahtea!). Flew on America West to Las Vegas in and out of JFK. I think they merged with another airline but the hubbed in Vegas so they had direct flights and the lowest fares. Try sidestep.com to hunt up good fares. We rented a car at the Vegas airport. I would follow Utahtea's advice on route, we did not go to the Grand Canyon this time, stuck with Bryce & Zion. The scenery of the drives between destinations are gorgeous, try to get to do them in daylight!

Thanks everyone, I haven't ruled out Lake Powell and Capitol Reef, in fact, I really want to stay at the River Rock Inn at Capitol Reef.

Utahtea, what's your opinion of those 2 places? Worth the detour?

Thanks!

YES, they are both great locations. If you do Capitol Reef make sure you drive scenic Hwy 12!

Lake Powell is beautiful if you are driving that way, but if time is limited don't drive out of your way unless you plan on some of the other activities like the float trip, boat tour or slots canyon tour.

Nina,
I have not heard of the River Rock Inn at Capitol Reef. Do you have a link to it? Thanks.

I found no listing for the River Rock Inn. Perhaps Nina was confused and was referring to the Rim Rock Inn instead? Here's the link: http://www.therimrock.net/

They have a lovely old west atmosphere.

(Nina, please share some contact information for the River Rock if it does, in fact, exist.)

Okey
I live near hear and I would either of course fly into Vegas or St. George Utah directly. St. George is 45 minutes from Zion. Many tourits fly in and out of there. It is a small airport but they have rent a car service etc.

You can fly in through Delta Skywest through Salt Lake city or from LA Untied Express. These are small planes and they fill up fast.

I used to drive back anf forth to vegas, no more we will not go unless out of St. george. It is easy to get on flight and being a small airport takes 2 seconds to get your car and get on your vacation.

Hope this helps.

Okay, here it is, it's called the Red River Ranch, it's in Torrey.

Here's the link.

I think you will find your best airfare and rental car prices if you fly to Las Vegas.

I wanted reservations to Phoenix and almost decided to fly to las Vegas and rent a car and drive to Phoenix because it was so much cheaper overall.

I decided not too because of the time required to drive back to Phoenix, but it was a time versus money question.

In your case, I don't think you have a wide range of choices other than LV or Salt Lake City, and SLC is about a 4.5 hour drive with all stops out from the SLC airport.

My wife made it once from Bryce to SLC in 4 hours and believe me she was flat hauling it because of a medical emergency.

You could go to Zion first or last.
Bryce logically falls in the middle.

Two places I suggest, one minor and one major, are Pipe Springs National Monument on the way to the GC North Rim, and the other is Route 12 between Bryce Canyon and Torrey, Utah.

Be sure you check road conditions for the North Rim. Snow has the route blocked sometimes until well into the spring. Sometimes the road does not open until mid May.

Thanks Brookwood, great information.

We'll be going in summer (I know, crazy), but won't have a chance until then.
