Zion to Albuquerque

Jump to last reply

Need some help. We are flying into Vegas on the 29th and thought we'd drive thru the valley of fire state park to zion. Webhave a hotel booked in Springdale for 9/29 and 9/30 leaving on October 1 Want to hike the narrows in zion (from river walk). Take the bus tour around the park and also to angel s landing , probably only making it up to scouts lookout. I know I can't make it to top. I am assuming this can all be done on the 30th.

Our next destination is albuquerque the night of 10/3 and 10/4. We will be at the balloon fest on the 4th (5th) if delays due to weather

Our next destination is vegas for a flight out on 10/7 mid afternoon.

Those above are our main wants/needs. The other days are all open and are confusing me.

Up in the zion , need advice. We'd like to hike another slot canyon, maybe the wave. I know you need a permit. Would also like the cowboy chuckwagon in kanab for entertainment. But, How would you suggest getting to Albuquerque with the most sights? Would we stop in monument valley (drive thru). Antelope canyon? Navaho Indian reservation? Unfortunately we are locked in with the dates I

How would you travel from Albuquerque to Vegas? I'm fine with just seeing some odd/unique sights along 66. Could stop/drive thru painted desert and petrified forest. Where would we spend the night? Wigwam in Winslow, drive further along. Maybe to Williams? Looking for any suggestions. Would like to tour Hoover dam, but not sure we'd have time

Looking forward to any help

Your plan for Zion on the 30th seems ambitious but doable. IIRC the hike up to Scouts Landing is about 2mi, and +~1500' elevation gain, and it took me about 45min at very fast pace. It's a lot of zig zag/up, and it could take twice that or longer depending on your fitness.

I recommend you try to go the next leg, about 100 yards past Scouts Landing. You will scramble on the rocks and can use chains for assistance. It's not for the feint of heart, but nothing nearly as difficult as the final stretch to Angel's Landing. If you go those 100 yards you will be directly facing AL and can really appreciated the marvel.

For the Narrows, you can go up river as short as 1/4, around a few bends from the start of the trail, or a mile or two upstream. You do not need to hike the entire 5mi bottoms up hike from the Temple of Sinawava (bus stop) to Big Spring (turn around point). That full 10mi round trip hike is a full day affair.

I recommend you do Scouts Landing in the am, then go to the narrows mid day/early afternoon when it will be warmer. You will ride the bus to/from the narrows so you'll get the full narrated tour anyway.
