Young AUSSIE couple, 10 days, Vegas, San Fran, La

My boyfreind and I will visiting in mid September. We would like to see Disneyland, Universal studios, Las Vegas, San Fransisco + more. We will have a limited buget and like to save money where possilble on accomodation, but prefer to steer clear of youth hostels. Ideas on getting from place to place. Hire car or fly to Vagas? etc.. Personally I also love bargain shopping and would love to find some outlets in these areas. I hope someone will be able to help us, Thank you very much!
Michelle.

Hello

It sounds like you have a great trip ahead of you. I wetn to LA and San Fran last year and am about to go over again on Sunday. You will be very surprised how inexpensive accommodation is in America a four star hotel can be had for as little as $25 dollars per night on package deals. If you're booking your own accommodation you might like to consider La Quinta motels and hotels. We stayed in numerous motels in the States and found La Quinta to be the best and great value. I'd suggest that you stay in a hotel in LA as the city can be a scary place if you pick lodgings in the wrong part of town. We've all heard the stories I guess!

I'll be visiting Disneyland and Universal Studios and can tell you more about them when I get back at the end of July.

Getting from place to place is affordable by air, you can buy coupons for different sectors and the fares are heavily discounted on top airlines. I'm using coupons on this trip to get from LA to NYC and from LA to Seattle and Vancouver ask your travel agent. You can easily drive or fly from LA to Vegas.
I have been making some enquiries about Outlet shopping and the best place seems to be Belz Outlet World in Las Vegas at the end of the Strip. I went to Belz in Orlando last year and it's every answer to a shopper's dream.

San Francisco is a wonderful city and very much like a combination of Perth and Sydney. Great restaurants and shopping.
Anyhow have a great trip.

Hi Michelle

Just got back from the States on the weekend.

Visited Universal Studios in Los Angeles again and still think that the one in Orlando is better placed.

I'd now suggest trhat you drive from LA to Las Vegas to see the contrast of city and desert. Vegas is such an amazing place. Talking to many people I have discovered that they either seem to love it or hate it. I'm one of the ones that love it. This is really an exciting place at night and there is so much to see. We walked along the strip and took in all of the free shows, erupting volcanos, pirate ship battles, lazer light spectaculars....... Just seeing the hotels themselves is impressive. We got lost in Excalibur and had to ask directions to the street, they are so huge. Apparently 9 of the ten biggest hotels in the world are here. We heard from a few people that they are building a hotel here with more than 18000 rooms. I don't know if its true, anywhere else and I would doubt it, here I don't know so much!

Stop by the Luxor for a meal they have a restaurant called Phaoroh's Pheast which is amazingly cheap. A huge all you can eat buffet with loads of different things to eat. These places make their money from the gaming floors so will entice you in with cheap food and drinks.

I went to the Belz Factory Outlets in Vegas and found some great bargains. Surprisingly enough I think that guys tend to get more bargains in clothing and shoes than girls. They don't seem to have the same bargains for you. SOme of the girls in our group felt the same!?!?

I also visited New York for 5 days and loved every bit of it. This is also another exciting city with something for everyone. It's a real buzz visiting some of the most famous places in the world like the Empire State Building!

Anyhow if you would like any more info just ask and I'll try to help. I love talking about America, in fact I love America!!!! Have fun.

One other thing Michelle, the Excalibur Hotel was offering rooms for $14.50 US per night while we were in town. There are some great deals around. We stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton, which was fantastic, they have some great acc deals as well.

Most of the young people in SF go "Clubbing" SOMA--ie, south of Market Street. Other areas you'll enjoy are Fillmore Street, the Haight, Union Street etc. You might also like to ride BART over to Berkeley--we call it Beserkly--it's very much a nonconformist, college aged town. Stay away from Las Vegas on weekends and you should be fine--eating in Vegas is very cheap--they want you there to gamble so are willing to feed you cheaply! I would certainly fly Southwest Airlines as much as possible--we've got fare wars going on right now and it will save you a lot of time--you're covering a bit of distance with your itinerary. In Las Vegas, if you stay out of the center of the Strip, you will get a much cheaper room--our college aged kids do it all the time. You might even win enough to pay for your room--my son did last summer, but BE WARNED--if you win at anything other than the slots, you must be 21 to collect and they WILL as for a passport, license etc.In L.A. think Santa Monica, Venice, and the beach towns going south for a younger crowd--lots of younger people down near LAX. Have a great time, and welcome to the U.S.!
