There is a Yotel New York opening June 1st and I am thinking of booking it for June 9-12. The price is right - $149 per night. My only concern is that it is non-refundable and I am concerned that the hotel won't open on time. Should I book it? (That is a VERY good price for New York.)

It is an incredibly good price for NYC, but it's also an incredibly small room and is a very limited service hotel, so it probably all balances out. What I'd suggest is that you book the room but also a back up that can be cancelled without penalty just in case. If the Yotel doesn't open, then you'll certainly get your money back, so I don't think that should be a major concern. But the hotel still does look very much like a construction zone right now.
My main concern is the location. It's very far west, though this is an increasingly interesting part of Manhattan. There are a lot more businesses and life along 10th Avenue than in years past, but it's also a VERY long walk to anything you might want to visit, and the only transport is the bus, which doesn't run very often.
Thanks for this info. The alternative is Priceline. I could probably get something for about that price, $149. Not sure if I want to stay in what could be a still-in-construction area. Thanks! I will ponder this.
Is this a Yotel like the airport hotel at Heathrow? I didn't know they had anything other than airport hotels.
No, this is different. It's real rooms, albeit very small ones. And NYC has a law that requires hotel rooms to have windows, so it's not going to be just a capsule. But I suspect the rooms will be more like those at the Paramount, where there's just room enough in the room for a bed and perhaps a little stand for your suitcase. There are, however, "deluxe" rooms that cost more.
FYI: There was an article about the hotel in USAToday. Here's a link: http://tinyurl.com/3hzyxp2
It looks really good, i had a look on the website the other day, unfortunately i've already booked somewhere else for NYC end of June or i would have considered it, i've stayed at Yotel at Heathrow on several occasions and never had a problem and from the photos this new one looks better!
I booked it. See what happens!
Not sure you said who you are traveling with. but the Pod Hotel has cheap rates.
Looks like you can get a bunkbed room those dates for $170 or a single room with shared bath for $160.
I've never stayed there but know that block pretty well. (I used to live two doors down.) Easy access to most parts of town by nearby subway, safe block (Police precinct on the block across 3rd Ave), and plenty of local places to eat on 2nd Avenue.
Colleague stayed there last year and liked it.
I booked Yotel at $149 per night.
Given that hotels in NYC often don't open on time, I suggest you have a backup plan. I'd also contact Yotel and ask THEM what happens if the hotel isn't open in time for your stay.
The risk yuo run is that they are technically "open" - that is have some rooms and lobby/staff - but they are still working on the rest of the building. May not be a problem if you are there only at night - but could be a PIA during the day.
I once stayed at a newly opened hotel in Amsterdam and it was fine - but other guests - who had been there sevral days - said the place had been full of painters and their gear - including taking up the elevator.
$149 in mid-June doesn't sound that great to me. I would keep checking Travelzoo and see if something else doesn't come up. I stayed at a Hampton Inn on 35th Street last year (breakfast included) for $139.
And I agree that 10th Avenue is pretty far from anything, with no convenient subway line.
I DID contact them and they offer a full refund if they are delayed for any reason. $149 is an amazing price for NY. I have been checking for weeks and the avg price for a room is WAY more than that. I know NY and it doesn't bother me to be on 10th Ave. We like to walk. If they do not have things ready I will do a last minute Priceline. I know I am taking a chance but for 2 nights for me and 3 for my daughter, we are hoping for the best! I check Travelzoo all the time. Thanks for the good advice!!
"And I agree that 10th Avenue is pretty far from anything, with no convenient subway line."
Have to disagree with that one.
The location is a 10 minute walk at most to the 8th Avenue entrance to the PA Bus Terminal which connects to A/C/E subway line. You walk another block east you're in Times Square. I would agree if this hotel was in the 30's as that is a more desolate area around the Javits center. But, there is plenty nearby to the east and north.
Numerous restaurants dot 9th Avenue from 42nd street to 57th. I can think of several on that stretch that I like. Rachel's at 43rd, Hell's Kitchen at 46th, Uncle Nick's at 50th, and Afghan Kebab at 51st to name just a few.
If there is an issue with that location it's traffic and the potential for noise. The hotel is probably on the lot that corners 10th and the small street that exits the Lincoln Tunnel. If it is that lot, it is going to be caddy-corner on the 41st street side to the ramp entering the PA Bus terminal from the tunnel. I believe there are also bus parking lots around 41st and 10th. The issue for me would be the traffic in the morning, afternoon and well hell, anytime as it is New York.
Well, it sounds like there may be a lot of negatives about this hotel. BTW, the Hampton Inn on 36th Street is quoting $314 as their lowest price right now for June.
I will report back after we stay at this hotel if it all works out. We have stayed in NY at the Grand Hyatt, The Mariott Marquis, The Sofitel, The Stanhope, Waldorf Astoria, The Mariott East Side, Eastgate Towers, and the sofa of our daughter's apartment in Manhattan and Queens, so we are pretty easy to please as long as it is clean. BUT this hotel could be a winner or a loser and I will be happy to report back. Wish me luck!
Here's a possibility from Travelzoo:

Thank you. azzure. The price is $229 per night on weekends. I have already booked the Yotel at $149, and it is paid for and non-refundable, unless the hotel does not open. I will continue to check travel zoo as June approaches in case we need to re-book.
Park Savoy still gets my vote. Very basic but clean and one block north of Carnegie Hall:
