Yosemite/Sequoia/Death Valley One Week in September/October-is it possible?

We are planning a trip to Yosemite in the fall of this year. We haven't decided on whether to go early September or early October? Any opinions on this?

We would also like to visit Sequoia and Death Valley but we are concerned that we are spreading ourselves too thin. Do you think it is feasible to visit all of these places in 8 days while still managing to hike? If not, which of the three would you leave for another time?

We don't yet know where we will be flying in.

Thanks for your guidance and suggestions!

I think you are trying to cover too much ground, but if you get open jaw tickets, flying into Fresno or San Jose and flying out of Las Vegas (or visa versa), it can be done. You will just not be able to spend much time in each location. Also, since you will want to go over Tioga Pass to make this trip work in such a short time, I would choose September over October. The average date for closing Tioga pass for the winter is Nov 1, so October may be cutting it close, depending on the weather.

Early October should be fine for driving over Tioga Pass. There are occasional storms in September and October that can close the road for a few days but it usually reopens and then closes for the winter in November.

However, the weather does not cool off in Death Valley until the end of October. If it was me, I'd skip DV if going in September and concentrate on Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon. There's plenty to do in those Parks and 8 days may not be enough time.

We did DV and Sequoia a month ago. Loved both of them. Click on my name to find trip report. We flew into Vegas and out of Fresno. Red Rock Canyon near Vegas is worth doing as well. DV will take 3-4 days to see everything. And depending on how much hiking you plan on doing, you could spend that long in Sequoia. I think I might skip Yosemite and spend a full week there later. You could definately do any of the 2 or just hit the high parts and miss some, if you do all 3.

Thanks for your input. I think we will leave DV for another trip at a time when the weather might not be as hot. I am sure that we will have more on our plates than we can handle with an eight day trip to Yosemite, Kings and Sequoia.

Thank you again!
