We will be driving from Yosemite back up the coast to visit Carmel, Monterey and Big Sur. Where should we spend the night (maybe two nights?) and should we drive to the Hearst Castle first?
How do we get there from Yosemite?

Depending on when you are coming, you might not want to drive on route 1 much south of Carmel. About a month ago, a section washed out at the Bixby bridge. Caltrans is doing all they can to get it back to two way traffic.
From Merced, 58 south to 152 west to route 156 hitting route 1 at Castroville. south on 1 through Monterey.
How can we find out about the repairs. We won't be there until the beginning of August.
You can call 1-800-gas-road ( 1-800-427-7623) to get road conditions for California. It is an automated line. At the prompt just say ONE (as in hwy 1) and it will give you the conditions for all of hwy 1 broken down in sections).
Or if you have internet access: http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi
