Yet Another Portland Hotel Question
Sorry!
We have only 1 late afternoon/evening in Portland & then out the the airport the next morning.
Sounds like '5th Avenue Suites' is a good choice for a scenario like that? Any other favorites here?
We'll be coming in from a fairly hectic day of hiking/touring the Gorge & Mt. Hood (from Bend). Ideally, we'd like to dump the car rental off near the hotel & take the train in early the next morning. What we *don't* want is NYC-like rush-hour driving conditions either when we arrive or in the AM.
I presume the dining choices are varied and good around the hotel?

Yes, the 5th Avenue Suites is a great place. Even though I live here, we have stayed a couple times and really enjoyed it. Location is great, rooms were very nice, and there is a good onsite restaurant (Red Star Tavern).

Good choice, Moonstone!
The 5th Avenue Suites are in a great location, plenty of good restaurants all around, I agree with mms, Red Star is great.
There really are no NYC-like rush-hours here, but I understand what you mean. It is a short, very short walk to the train from the hotel.
A short walk to the Streetcar which will take you anywhwere in town to restaurants or just good walks.

Yes, the 5th Ave. Suites would be a good choice. So would the Hotel Vintage Plaza (another Kimpton hotel, same type of "boutique" hotel). The MAX is fairly close by. You will want to take the MAX RED LINE (not blue or yellow) from Yamhill Street to the airport. It's about four blocks from the hotel to the MAX stop. It takes about 35-40 minutes to get from downtown to the airport, but the MAX stop at the airport is directly at the terminal; get off the train and take the escallator right up to check-in.
The 5th Ave is in the heart of downtown, near Waterfront Park and also SW Broadway. There are couple of noted restaurants on Broadway such as Typhoon! (Tai place) and Pazzo Ristorante.
Public transit is great. In Portland, downtown has free buses and trains in the area called Fareless Square (all of downtown). 5th and 6th Avenues (1-way streets) are collectively called the Bus Mall where most buses converge. Just get on the bus and say "fareless." 6th Avenue goes north, and if you catch the #17 bus on 6th Avenue, it will take you directly to the Pearl District (get off at 10th); Walk back to Everett Street to catch the #17 back to the hotel. Go to TriMet.org to get bus info - you can even check bus arrival times at various stops with your cell phone. The Streetcar is good also but it's several more blocks from the hotel.
You can also go south to Riverplace on the river and walk around there. There a few decent restaurants there such as the Newport Bay which is right on the water (you can get an outdoor table). It's a bit of a walk along the waterfront park south to Riverplace; you could take the buses there or hike all the way up to the Streetcar to get there.

Equally easy to get to and from downtown is the Inn@Northrup Station..on NW 21st. They are on the streetcar line so not hard to get around town or to the Max line.
Let us know if you have problems with the hotels, maybe we can think of something

Thanks for great recap Andrew!
We're still working on the hotel. 5th is booked and Vintage has 2 rooms. Something must be going on then?
Oh... we're looking at Monday the 25th.
Scarlett - we'll look at the Inn. Thank you.

I'll toss out a recommendation for Hotel DeLuxe, the new name for the old Mallory Hotel, which was recently remodeled with a retro 1930's - 40's Hollywood theme. Very cool when we walked through several months ago; I can give a more thorough report after this week.
Located right on the MAX line, and within walking distance of NW Portland, the Pearl, and downtown, you'd have a lot of great dining options.

I have stayed at the Inn at Northrup and was quite happy with it - although its a bit of a shock- very retro with lots of purple and green carpets and wild colors. Its a great location though and parking is included which is always a bonus.
You can walk to several great restaurants and the 23rd st shops easily from there.

So where is the best place to stay downtown and enjoy downtown. I mean where can we stay and have the most fun walking around to different downtown pubs and restaurants without worry of being in the wrong spot. Love to hear from you on this.

The Monaco (formerly 5th Avenue Suites) seems to be the board favorite. Sister property Hotel Vintage Plaza a few blocks away on SW Broadway is a good second choice. Also, the Benson, the Lucia, and the Heathman are good choices as classic or botique hotels. The Embassy Suites down on SW 2nd is a beautiful, historic hotel (the former Multnomah Hotel) close to some popular bars (mostly younger crowd).
