Yes - NYC WAS More Crowded

NYC Tourist Board has announced that a high of more than 44 million people visited NYC in 2006 - more than 8 milion of them foreigners. So - it wasn;t our imagination, streets were really more crowded and there was a reason for those super high hotel rates in November and December.

Happy New Year to you NYTRAVELER. Thanks for that info. I was in the great city of NY in Nov with my family. It is the greatest city in the US if not the world that I have ever visited. By the look of my AMEX statement, it is also the most $$$. We are all still reliving the excitement of it and can't wait to return soon. Cheers - Calamari

I live in the East Village (NYC) and work in midtown and I really felt the tourist presence, particularly near my office in midtown. I'll bet the warmer then normal temperatures helped bring in more people this holiday season. Except for one or two days, it's been unseasonably warmish here.

It is getting that Times Square is absolutely miserable any time of year.

I noticed this, too. Every year for the past 6 years or so, I take my boys out of school one day during the week in Dec. and we spend a day in Manhattan doing Christmas stuff. We always have a great time, and are able to see so much b/c we avoid the huge weekend crowds.

This year, we thought it was much more crowded on the Thurs. we went. Macy's had a line for Santa at 10am - at this time we usually breeze right up. The streets seemed more crowded, too, but, Rockefeller Center was not as crowded as it usually was.

I don't think the Wall St. Bull can take any more fondling.

I just got back from escorting my parents to the Met, and it is freaking MOBBED!! Thank god I got out of there alive, but it was worth it for the "Americans in Paris" exhibit.

Haha – he is quite a symbol. You couldn’t even see it today at lunch because there must have been 80 people all over it. Is it really a “must do” for visitors? I see from here that a lot of people just take ferries for a view of the Statue of Liberty and don’t actually go see it. But people cannot keep their hands off that poor bull!

I just love the entire downtown/Financial District area. I now stay in that area as much as possible.

It is quiet at night, there is a lot to do, Century 21, and it is the most historical area (and beautiful) of Manhattan.
