I'd recommend three books:
1. Frommer's "Yellowstone & Grand Tetons National Parks."
2. The Wyoming book in the Discover America series, published by Compass American Guides. (While the book covers the entire state, you get a lot of interesting historical information. In general, this is a magnificent series of state books that I heartily endorse.)
3. If you're a photographer, then I strongly recommend "Photographer's Guide to Yellowstone & the Tetons," published by Stackpole Books.

I borrowed the others mentioned here from the library, BUT bought "Yellowstone Treasures" by Janet Chapple. We are going in June and I can not imagine a more beautiful or informative book than this one, I bought it on amazon.com , FYI Judy

Would suggest Yellowstone Grand Teton Road Guide by Free Wheeling Guides. Points out things to look for along the park roads as well as history of the park. If you want books strictly on hiking trails: Teton Trails by Katy Duffy and Darwin Wile or Yellowstone Trails by Mark C. Marschall. Could also contact the natural history association at either park for a list of materials they sell.
