You probably know that you must go into Yellowstone with a guide. There are a limited number of machines allowed in per day and you'll see them all traveling in a row. We took the snowcoach tour from West Yellowstone and there were a lot of groups going into the park from there.
Winter in Yellowstone is amazing and whether you go by snowmobile or snowcoach it will be an experience you won't forget.
It was one of the most spectacular things I've ever done. We did the tour that stopped at Old Faithful. It was February and I thought we'd be freezing but it was very comfortable. There was a stop at a warming hut so that kept us from getting too cold. We made a reservation as soon as we got there and checked the weather. Yellowstone in the winter is breathtaking.
We did it before the new rules took effect but we LOVED it. It is just amazing seeing such a fabulous place in the winter. We plan to do it again some day. We'll just have to put up with having a guide next time.
BTW, West Yellowstone has over 400 miles of groomed trails, some that go along the Continental Divide. We really enjoyed doing that one day too--almost as much as Yellowstone. The trails were smoother but we were in Yellowstone on the last day of snowmobiling so they hadn't groomed the trails. West Yellowstone area touts themselves as the snowmobile capitol of the U.S..
We rode two up and really regretted it. The person on back gets a hard jolt every time you hit a bump and that can be often if the trails aren't real smooth.
The rental people have great snowmobile suits that keep you very warm.
