Yellowstone in September?

We've decided to take a trip to Yellowstone and we're flexible as far as the time of year. From my early research, it looks like September (after the kiddies have gone back to school) may be a good time. Any pros and cons for that time of the year? Is it already too late to get lodging in the park?

About eight years ago I was there in mid September. The Mammoth Hot Springs and Hamilton stores were closing that weekend. The Snow Lodge stays open longer.

The elk rutting was so fabulous in front of MHS Hotel it ranks up there with some of our best memories. The park was NOT crowded, although we could not get into the main Lodge for lodging or dinner (make dinner reservations too when you make room reservations)

As far as too late, make reservations soon.. but don't be discouraged if there is not room. Keep trying as cancellations are frequent.

I think the chat page at www.yellowstone-natl-park.com http://www.yellowstone-natl-park.com/wwwboard/chat2.htm has the most informed yellowstone supporters and is a GREAT source of Yellowstone info. Post a similar message there and check out the archive.

Two or 3 years ago, I went during the last week of September. I was shocked how crowded the Old Faithful area was. We stayed there two nights and atleast one of those nights it was sold out. It had snowed the weekend before - we got there on Tuesday. While in places there was snow, the roads were fine. Away from the Old Faithful area it was pretty empty. Saw lots of wildlife including a grizzly bear. I think it's definitely better going after labor day then during the summer. The weather was gorgeous during the day but cold at night. Not that I'd be roaming around at night with all the animals, especially buffalo, on the road.

We were there late Sept. 2002. We were very surprised how crowded the park was. Even though it was supposed off/shoulder season, we were told by several park employees there really is no "off" season anymore. We still had a great time, Yellowstone is huge we spent 3 days just driving the park and still did not see all of it. We stayed in West Yellowstone due to family that lives there so I cannot comment on park accomodations, though out of curiosity, when visiting Old Faithful, we asked lodge and they were booked. There was road construction that time of year but it is well marked and times posted to road closures, you just plan around it.

We arrived in that area the day after Labor Day a few years ago and had glorious time--the crowds weren't there, the trees were a beautiful golden yellow and the weather was great, except for snow on the day we left for home! Comfortable days, cool nights. You should be able to get lodging if you act now. If I recall, we booked our trip on a snowy day in January!
