Yellowstone---which Lake cabins to choose?

We're finalizing our plans for our Yellowstoine portion of the trip and have the choice (at this time) of staying in the Lake Lodge cabins or the cabins at the Lake Yellowstone Hotel. Anybody out there know which is the cabin to choose? Once again, many thanks!

The cabins have different names like frontier, western, economy which offer varying levels of comfort. Do you have the same type in both places?

No, the types offered are different. The "nicer" Western cabins are in the Lake Lodge area, but the cabins at the Lake Yellowstone Hotel have recently been refurbished and we're wondering whether their location, nearer to the hotel, is a factor. Trying to decide with only the photos on the Xanterra web is impossible!

My impression from the outside of the Lake YS Hotel cabins is that they looked a bit stark, all lined up like little soldiers next to the grander hotel. Reviews say that double cabins have very thin walls, don't know if that got fixed during renovations. The lobby of the hotel was lovely and, for me, that would be a nice place to sit in the evening with a book and latte or glass of wine.

The photo of the Lake Lodge cabins look exactly like the ones we stayed in at Canyon last summer. Picture is very true to reality. A bit dark but clean, comfortable and spacious enough. I think the Lake Lodge area is subject to less traffic and in a more wooded setting which would be a plus for me.

Whatever reservation you take, keep calling to see about something better opening up. As it's reported here, cancellations are frequent but you're more likely to grab something by phoning than using the website.

We've stayed in the hotel which was nice (lobby is a nice place to hang out). However, recommend avoiding the lake view (windows are small and really not much of a view for the extra price you pay)

Would any of you recommend staying in the Canyon instead of the Lake area? We've already got 3 days booked for the Snow Lodge.

gtrgrl: Here's a link to a chat page frequented by people who are very familiar with the park. They can give you the lowdown.

Yes, I'd take the Canyon accommodations (lodge or "nicer" cabins) over the Lake cabins. It's a more central location.

We really enjoy OF Snow Lodge.

We're getting there...with your help! It seems as though the Canyon will have more appeal for the boys (12 and 16) although the Lake sure sounds better to me. As the "cabins" in Yellowstone don't seem to be cabins at all and I've read some scary reviews of even the nicer Western cabins at both Lake Lodge and Canyon, does anyone out there think the Canyon Lodges Dunraven or Cascade would be a better bet? While we've enjoyed cabins at other Nat'l parks and were hoping for similar, these don't seem to offer the cabin experience.

We stayed at the Canyon lodge (Cascade, I believe) 2-3 summers ago and I was more than pleasantly surprised. It was a fairly large motel type room - relatively new and on the backside of the complex there...quiet but well within walking distance all the facilities there. I would not hesitate to stay there again. My family (2 teenage girls) really enjoyed the canyon area of the park.
