My first time to New York AND at Xmas I can't wait !!
Could anyone help with suggestions on where to stay? (Budget of $100 per person per night).
Should we book a hotel or go self-catering apartment?
Where to celebrate Xmas (Xmas lunch always very important).
Perhaps to meet with like-minded "visitors/foreigners" for Xmas lunch would be fab!

If by "budget of $100 per person, per night" you mean that you are looking for a double occupancy room for around $200, you should be able to swing it. Ordinarily, that would be difficult since hotels in NY in December can be very expensive. It seems like lots of posters on this site have gotten good rates through priceline for some great hotels. You might want to search other NY threads for the actual link.
If you go to <quickbook.com> you can find a number of hotels in every price range. If you are planning to stay a few days, I would suggest finding one with a mini-bar and a coffee maker, then go buy breakfast and lunch stuff in the corner grocery instead of finding a restaurant for these. This is what we did in a Marriott Suites Hotel in Maryland. Otherwise a B and B would provide breakfast.
