My husband and I would like to do a small weekend vacation in WV with our two little children (under 3 1/2). We would like to rent a cabin somewhere scenic, hopefully nearby a lovely little town that we can roam around and shop (antique stores, fall festivals, country stores, that sort of thing). We're having a hard time finding that "little town". Any suggestions for us?

Berkeley Springs has an Apple Butter Festival the weekend of October 6th and 7th.
While I wouldn't call Wheeling a small town, Oglebay Resort would be perfect for you and the kids. They have both a lovely lodge and cabins. It is set apart from the city of Wheeling, so you really can have some decent restaurants and yet feel somewhat isolated. Several magazines have chosen Oglebay as the perfect family vacation. Check it out.

Suggest you look into Blackwater Falls State Park. Beautiful setting atop the Allegheny Plateau, with one of the most scenic waterfalls in West Virginia. There's a lodge, cabins, and camping inside the state park ( http://www.blackwaterfalls.com/accomodations.htm ). Davis -- the highest incorporated town in West Virginia -- is nearby ( http://www.daviswva.com/ ).
