Hello!
My DH has a business trip to Austin that surrounds 4th of July weekend, so I am looking for some good daytrips. We have three children (ages 5 yrs, 3 yrs, 1 yr); our family is good in the car as long as we have some great stuff to see and eat as we travel/as a destination. We're all for hiking, eating ice cream (thinking Brenham is on the list) and BBQ (Lockhart?), swimming....we're a pretty adventurous crew.
I'm up for any and all suggestions. If anything isn't going to work for us now, certainly, I'll tuck them away for future reference as my kiddos grow up.

Austin is a child friendly destination. There is a lot to see and do. I'd recommend the Children's Museum and the Austin Nature and Science Center, Zilker Park and Barton Springs.
There are many casual restaurants on Barton Springs Road including Shady Grove and Chuy's that would be good bets with the kids in conjunction with an outing to the park. Amy's Ice Cream is local and has several locations, Teo Gelato is always good and Phil's Ice House on Burnet Road is a great destination for meals with kids and has a wonderful playscape.
If you need to pick up a few groceries, Central Market hands out free balloons, has piggy banks for kids to feed a quarter and choose their own fresh organic fruit snack or buy a flower and the in store restaurant has kid friendly menu items.
