Within a few hours of Miami in January - suggestions?
My husband will be taking a class for work in Miami, ending on Thursday January 24. I can use FF miles to fly down to Miami on the 24th, and we can both fly back together on the 28th. We'll probably stay at his work hotel on the 24th, and then on the 25th we can go to wherever we want. We'll fly back from Miami on Monday, the 28th. So we have 3 nights to go somewhere.
I need suggestions on where to go that won't be super expensive. I know it's a very busy time to go to south Florida. We love tropical beaches. We've been to Key West and really like it there, but I was thinking about one of the other keys? Any suggestions on places to stay? We don't have a particular budget set yet.
We'd also consider Miami and Ft. Lauderdale.
All suggestions are welcomed! Thanks so much!

If you're open to the idea of cruising, Royal Carribbean has a 3 night cruise departing from Miami on Jan 25 with 2 stops in the Bahamas (Nassau and CocoCay). I only mention that since you like beaches and don't want it to be super expensive...the cruise is a fairly inexpensive (comparatively speaking) way to go. Not for everyone, though!

I would spend at least one night in the Key Largo/Islamorada area. It's about a 1.5 hour drive from Miami BEach.
On the way, stop in Everglades National Park, using the FLorida City entrance. There's a visitor center outside the park gates that is worth a quick stop. But the best venue is the Anhinga Trail, about 10 min inside the park gates. It's a 1/2 mile boardwalk through a sawgrass marsh. You'll see lots of alligators and other critters. Include a stop at Robert is here fruit stand into or out of the park. Great milk shakes and the fresh strawberries will be in season.
Lodging could be in Key Largo, Tavernier or Islamorada. Look at tripadvisor reviews to see what fits your needs. You should book soon as this is a busy time.
Have dinner at Morada Bay -it's an upscale outdoor restaraunt. Get there early for a drink at sunset.
