My hubby and I are thinking of taking 3 of our grandchildren to the Dells for about 3-4 days this summer. They are 8, 6, 5 and we are young, too! We vacationed there many times w/our own kidlets years ago and have passed through on occasion in recent years so we do know all about the touristy aspect, etc. What we're wondering about is: does anyone know anything about the older, smaller hotels located right by Noah's Ark? I'm wondering about Flamingo, Mayflower, Four Seasons, others? I remember that we liked them (way back when) because they are w/in walking distance to Noah's. Does anyone have any recent experience w/these or any others? (clean? friendly?)I know it can be a pain to pack everyone up, drive, park, and still hike a distance to the parks. Plus...the group is forced to stay the day and Nana (or Papa) cannot take 1 sleepy child back to the room without taking the car. Is it necessary in July to stay @ a big resort w/all the indoor amenities? Are there any shuttle services? Any opinions or insight is appreciated. I also welcome any other suggestions on things to do, where to eat, etc.
Wisconsin Dells hotels any recent visitors?

We've only stayed at the larger resorts in the Dells, but I really like the convenience of them - for the specific reason you mentioned. If someone gets tired or needs a break, the room is right there. We've enjoyed Treasure Island (nice indoor and outdoor), Great Wolf Lodge and Kalahari. We also like going to the Paul Bunyon restaurant for a family style meal (breakfast is one of our favorites). The Ducks are also a treat for the kids, if you've never done that before. I don't like the "cheesy" downtown, so we steer clear from that area. You are terrific grandparents! Have fun!
If you are not picky about extras, you could always stay at the Flamingo Motel. It is right next door and they give you free admittance to Noah's Ark, which save quite a bit of money. However, it isn't not the fanciest motel in the Dells area.
Treasure Island has its own indoor water park, plus it is built into a complete outdoor amusement park.
Like blueslipper said, you could stay at a larger resort and save yourself the hassle of the drive, walk, and admittance price. Some good ones would be Great Wolf Lodge, Kalahari, Wilderness, Chula Vista, and Treasure Island. I prefer Chula Vista myself, but it is kind of out of the way.
