Winthrop Lodging
We've decided on 2 overnights at Winthrop during our loop through Washington. Sun River Inn is above our budget although it looks lovely. River Run Inn looks nice and appears to be walking distance to town and restaurants. Alternative is Rio Vista which is right in town. Any experience with these?

Sun Mountain Lodge is the most luxurious resort in Washington, and, as a result, room rates have gone over the moon. Go there for a meal. If you don't want to spring for the special-occasion-priced dining room, the bar serves a limited menu and it has a small deck with the same fabulous view you would get from one of the $350 rooms.
We have checked out River Run a few times, but never stayed there because we don't find the location as appealing as the web site makes it appear.
Rio Visa is the best motel in town, and it is the newest because the original structure was burned to the ground a few years ago. It's on the main drag, but rooms all face way from the road with decks overlooking the river.
If we knew your itinerary, we might be able to suggest alternative places to stay on one of the two nights you are in the area.

I have friends who stay at River Run every year and love it, though I've never seen it. Like the other poster said, Rio Vista is fairly new and does look nice from the outside. It is right on the highway (main street at that point) in the center of town, so it is in the center of all the tourist traffic and bustle. I'd ask for a room furthest from the road.
There are a number of b and b's and inns outside of town that would be quieter and more scenic (lots of stars at night!) that are still in your price range:

I've stayed at Wolf Ridge and Mazama Country Inn, both of which I liked just fine, though they do require a drive into town.
I'll add to the above poster: Rack rates are high at Sun Mountain but they have specials so often (right now, $79 per person w/breakfast until mid-June) that I've never paid full price.

The Rio Vista is the best in town. You can't beat the view of the river from your private balcony. It's wonderful to hear the river while you are sleeping and you don't hear any noise from the road. We have also stayed at the Duck Brand across the street. Each room has a balcony with a view of the restaurant below and the downtown area. This place can be noisy, but the smells from the restaurant are heavenly (especially from the bakery). It's a lot of fun to stay in town and not have to drive. There are lots of great places to eat besides the Duck, such as the Brewery with riverside dining. A drive up to Sun Mountain is a must. Such a beautiful place.

Thanks for the input everyone. We finally made the decision and have booked 2 nights at River Run in one of their cabins. It appealed to us being outside of town a bit as the rest of 11 days on the road we will no doubt be in more "normal" motels. The staff at River Run said we could walk to town along the river, although it is not an established path, via a path through the woods, or along the road. Stretching our legs surrounded by lovely countryside while on the way to dinner or a breakfast is really appealing. Will post a trip report when we return mid July.
