Wine Train worth $100 a head?

Hi -

My husband and I are just learning about wine and have never been to Napa.

We were thinking the Wine Train might be a good way to try some wine and see some scenery before we start doing Napa trips.

Do you think it's a good way to introduce yourself to the region? We were thinking of doing on of the lunch trains. I don't want to go at night because then we won't be able to enjoy the vineyards passing by.

Any input?

Lynn

Since I live in the area, I would not spend the $. My daughter did and felt it was overpriced.People grumble because it runs along the highway (a route you could do with a car). If I were a tourist I probably would do it though.Make sure to do a text search as this has been discussed before. Whether you go or not you will have a great time in this beautiful area!

I'd do it - it's great fun, no-one has to drive, it's scenic, and a great way to introduce yourself to the area. Whilst you're in Napa, get over to see Sonoma, the petrified forest, the geyser etc..

I would never advise you to spend the money on the Wine Train. You will parallel hwy 29 which is one tasting room after another, small hotels and stores and lots and lots of traffic. The people who live in the Napa Valley hate the train because it just adds to the congestion and traffic, and since you won't be allowed to get on and off, it doesn't bring any business to the merchants. You will not have views of vineyards and countryside. It's basically a rolling restaurant with OK food, some very common wines from the area and very steep prices. Get a booklet about Napa, study it and go off on your own. It's a very easy place to visit. Do take one of the cross roads over to the Silverado Trail, which is much prettier than 29. Save your money for one of the fabulous restaurants instead. There tons of info here if you do a search, you'll probably only need a basic map of where the wineries are.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm going to do much more research before I decide. My husband doesn't care either way so it's pretty much up to me.

It's 11:00am EST and the Food Network is presently airing a special about the Napa Valley Wine Train Tour.

Have heard nothing but negative things about the wine train-expensive and food's not good plus you don't get to experience the real thing
