Wilmington, DE question

Hello,

I've applied for a job that I'm very interested in, in Wilmington DE, which I know nothing about. I've read a couple former threads about Wilmington, but didn't see this question discussed: my husband and I would ideally like to live in an area that is somewhat artsy/urban, perhaps walking distance to some restaurants, cafes, etc...even more ideally, also some performing arts venue/s. However, also require that it be a relatively safe neighborhood and one where it would be safe and maybe even pretty to walk outside our door and be able to take a walk for a mile or two. Kind of like the Mount Airy, or even Chestnut Hill, areas of Philadelphia. Counterparts here in Connecticut are probably West Hartford and Middletown.

Does this exist in any Wilmington neighborhood (preferable), or nearby neighborhood? We're in our 40s if that matters; don't have kids so school system doesn't matter; and like to get involved in the community we live in.

Thanks for any help!

I live an Wilmington as well - similar areas to consider - the "Highlands" which is adjacent to Trolley Square and contains the Delaware Art Museum and Rockford Park. Also nearby are "Little Italy" and "Wawaset Park". These areas have a somewhat more "suburban" feel than downtown- eg mature trees and grass but still have sidewalks - IMO very similar to West Hartford (I grew up in Avon). Downtown neighborhoods with a more urban feel - "Trinity Vicinity", "Quaker Hill", and the newly renovated "Ships Tavern District".

Thank you both! If I get the job, we will definitely check out those areas. Are any of them known for being more racially integrated than others (a quality we enjoy)?

Now if I only get the job... But perhaps now that I know a little of Wilmington, if this one doesn't work out, I'll look for another! We were wanting to move closer to Philadelphia and New Jersey anyway, to be nearer to my mother and brother, and had never before considered Wilmington, until I saw this job that looks so potentially right for me.

I just moved to Wilmington too (from the Bay Area), and we are renting for a few months while we get to know the area. I appreciate the previous comments!
If others have further input, or can recommend good food shops (esp. cheese!) and things to do with visitors, that would be great.

I worked in the tourism industry in Wilmington for over 10 years including the local CVB, museums and hotels. I agree with Barry and Rumitra - I always thought of Trolley Square as the "yuppie place" in the "80's and 90's, lovely old turn of the century homes, some duplex style some single family. The Highlands is lovely and is the beginning of the "upper crutst" in Wilmington. Homes in that area easily go for $400,000+.
There are many world-class museums and attractions within a 10 mile radius of downtown Wilmington: Winterthur (fabulous), Historic New Castle (several historic buildings and a large historic district), Wilmington & Western Railroad, Nemours Mansion (fabulous), Hagley Museum, Delaware History Museum, The DuPont Theatre, the Grand Opera House, and more. Remember we're located very close to the Pennsylvania border and within that 10 mile radius is Longwood Gardens, Brandywine River Museum and more. We have outlet shopping along the Christina River front as well as a minor league ball team, the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
There's no sales tax in Delaware and the beaches are spectacular and only an hour and 1/2 away. Plus if you want to go to Philadelphia, it's only 30 miles away, Baltimore is only an hour away AND New York and Washington, D.C. are each 2 hours away. All these places have websites as well as the Great Wilmington CVB which is www.visitwilmingtonde.com. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.
