toncasmo, did they go ahead and charge your credit card a couple of nights as a deposit when you reserved? (Say it is refundable up to three days before you arrive.) I'm advising a friend ... when you say the pool is not fancy, you mean adequate size, clean, plenty of chairs but just not water slides and swim-up pool bars, etc.? Can you order drinks at the pool? Did you get pretty much the room you requested ... # of beds, building, etc.? Thanks so much!

I don't recall the charge on my credit card...but that doesn't mean it didn't happen....
pool is small but clean and lots of chairs. when i'm in hawaii i don't spend time at the pool because i can do that at home so it was fine for us for a quick dip. there's a bar right next to it with great drinks and food
we got the building we wanted but there was only 2 queens and not a king when we got there so we took that- was fine

If you go into tripadvisor, and click on "reviews of the Kaanapali Beach Hotel", then go down on the right side, there are "traveler photos" that show the pool quite clearly.

sf7307, yes, I did look at the TA photos, but sometimes photos are deceptive, and I like hearing from someone who's been on a property. Thanks for your input. I think I'm going to advise my friend to go with the KBH. Thanks again toncasmo. They're promising me an OF in the Kauai bldg. but won't GUARANTEE two beds, but that could be lived with.

I find that the "professional" photos are often deceptive, but that the "traveler's photos" are usually accurate (I've posted my own in a number of cases)

I'm glad to see your question and the replies this morning, and I'm sorry to somewhat hijack your thread, but I just bought an amazing Expedia package at this hotel, $1,093 for 6 nights (garden view room) and a car in late May over Memorial Day weekend, including all taxes! Based on all the affection people seem to have for this place, I've been wanting to stay there for years.

Aloha!

We stayed there in October. It's not a 5-star hotel, but it's very comfortable, calm & casual. If you've not in fluff & fancy, this hotel should work fine for you. We alternated between pool & ocean regularly; we sometimes got sick of so much sand in our swimsuits. Yes, you can get drinks delivered to your spot by the pool. And the entire staff wonderful & friendly. Drinks are a little pricey after you pay for a few; we then bought water bottles and made drinks in our room. Have fun!

One warning -- they charge extra for parking your car. At least they did 2 years ago when my son was there. Check to see how much it adds to your bill. (And there's really no alternative place for parking.)

I stayed here in June 2008 and LOVED it and would most definetly stay again. The rooms were nice and big, the location & price were the best on the beach, the pool area was very nice (good drinks at their poolside bar) and the lawn is huge and park like. I never had to wait on a lounge chair either. We had a mini frig in our room so we could get a few groceries. The location and price are unbeatable. We would walk down to Whaler's Village for shopping/dining. Very relaxing!

This a favorite spot for us...yes it's not a fancy, lush place. However, it is clean, comfortable, perfectly located and the local staff treat you with a warmth we have not found at any other establishment. We highly recommend it. We have been there 3 times ourselves and friends have enjoyed it as well.

The pool is small compared to the big hotel chains but clean and there are always chairs available near it and also available on the lawns, in the sun or under the trees. The beach is a great one. A simple and short walk to black rock gives you great access to snorkeling and you can rent gear right at the hotel beach. You can also watch the cliff diving at black rock at sunset in the evening from the beach. Whaler's Village is a short walk along the paved beach trail-- nice restaurants and shopping. As mentioned above, fridges are available in the rooms as well as two restaurants on site.

(This tread is from Jan) But we just got back last week staying at this hotel, and I would ask for a room in one of the newer bldg. We got a "garden view" in the older building and the railing is wood which blocks your view when seating, so the view is only when you are standing up. PLUS, there is no elevator in the building. Had we know this we would have asked for a different bldg. I know, you aren't there much some days, but still didn't like going up 3 flights whenever we went back to the rooms, especially with bad knees.

We would recommend this hotel, but you still have to pay $9.00 a day for parking.
